Daniel's prayer
In the first year of Darius son of Ahasuerus, of the line of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans — in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the books the number of years the word of the Lord had given to Jeremiah the prophet: seventy years, for the desolations of Jerusalem. So I set my face toward the Lord God, to seek him in prayer and pleading, with fasting and coarse mourning cloth and ashes. And I prayed to the Lord my God and made my confession: Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant and his mercy with those who love him and keep his commandments. We have sinned. We have done wrong. We have acted wickedly and rebelled, turning away from your commandments and your judgements. We haven't listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our leaders, our fathers and all the people of the land. Lord, righteousness belongs to you, and to us shame on our faces, as it is today — to the men of Judah, to the people of Jerusalem and to all Israel, near and far, in all the countries you have driven them to, because of the unfaithfulness they showed you. Lord, shame on our faces belongs to us, to our kings, our leaders and our fathers, because we have sinned against you. Mercy and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled against him. We haven't obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, or walked in the laws he set before us through his servants the prophets. All Israel has broken your law and turned away, refusing to obey your voice. So the curse has been poured out on us, and the oath written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him. And he has carried out the words he spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing on us a great disaster. Nothing has ever been done under the whole of heaven like what has been done to Jerusalem. Just as it is written in the law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us. And still we haven't sought the favour of the Lord our God by turning from our wrongs and paying attention to your truth. So the Lord kept the disaster ready and brought it on us. Because the Lord our God is righteous in everything he does, and we didn't obey his voice. And now, Lord our God, you brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and made a name for yourself, as it is today. We have sinned. We have done wickedly. Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, I beg you, turn your anger and fury away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain. Because of our sins and the wrongdoing of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people have become an object of scorn to everyone around us. So now, our God, hear the prayer of your servant and his pleading, and for the Lord's sake make your face shine on your sanctuary, which lies desolate. My God, turn your ear and hear. Open your eyes and look at our desolations, and at the city called by your name. Because we don't lay our pleas before you on the strength of anything right in us, but because of your great mercies. Lord, hear. Lord, forgive. Lord, listen and act. Don't delay, for your own sake, my God — because your city and your people are called by your name.
In the first year of Darius son of Ahasuerus, of the offspring of the Medes, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans — in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years that the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet about, that he'd finish seventy years for the wrecking of Jerusalem. And I set my face towards the Lord God to look for him by prayer and pleading, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. And I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed and said: Lord, the great and terrifying God, who keeps the covenant and mercy with the ones who love him and keep his orders — we've sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, by turning aside from your orders and your judgments. And we haven't listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our officials and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. Lord, righteousness belongs to you, and shame of face to us, the way it is today — to the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem and all Israel, near and far off, through all the countries you've driven them to, because of the faith they've broken with you. Lord, shame of face belongs to us, to our kings, our officials and our fathers, because we've sinned against you. Mercies and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we've rebelled against him. And we haven't listened to the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his teachings that he set in front of us by his servants the prophets. Yes, all Israel has stepped over your teaching by turning aside, so they wouldn't listen to your voice. So the curse has been poured out on us, and the oath written in the teaching of Moses the servant of God, because we've sinned against him. And he's carried out his words that he spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing on us a great trouble. Because under the whole sky nothing has been done like what's been done to Jerusalem. The way it's written in the teaching of Moses, all this trouble has come on us. But we haven't pleaded in front of the Lord our God, to turn from our wrongdoing and understand your truth. So the Lord has watched over the trouble and brought it on us. Because the Lord our God is righteous in everything he does. Because we didn't listen to his voice. And now, Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a strong hand and got yourself a name the way it is today — we've sinned, we've acted wickedly. Lord, according to all your righteousness, please let your anger and your fury be turned away from your town Jerusalem, your holy mountain. Because for our sins and for the wrongdoing of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people are an insult to everyone round us. So now, our God, hear the prayer of your servant and his pleading, and make your face shine on your holy place that's a wreck, for the Lord's sake. My God, turn your ear and hear. Open your eyes and look at our wrecked places and the town that's called by your name. Because we don't lay our pleading in front of you for our righteousness, but for your great mercies. Lord, hear. Lord, forgive. Lord, pay attention and do it. Don't hold back, for your own sake, my God. Because your town and your people are called by your name.

The seventy weeks
And while I was speaking and praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and laying my plea before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God — while I was still speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the start, came to me in swift flight and touched me about the time of the evening offering. And he explained to me and talked with me and said, Daniel, I have come now to give you skill and understanding. At the beginning of your pleading the word went out, and I have come to tell you, because you are greatly loved. So understand the matter and consider the vision. Seventy weeks are decreed for your people and for your holy city — to finish the wrongdoing, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for wrongdoing, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. So know and understand this: from the going out of the word to restore and rebuild Jerusalem, until Messiah the Prince, will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. The street will be built again, and the wall, in times of trouble. And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah will be cut off, but not for himself. And the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end will come with a flood, and to the end of the war desolations are decreed. He will confirm the covenant with many for one week, and in the middle of the week he will cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease. And as disgusting things spread, he will make it desolate, until the determined end is poured out on the desolate.
And while I was speaking and praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and laying my pleading in front of the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God — yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel that I'd seen in the vision at the start, being made to fly quickly, touched me about the time of the evening offering. And he explained it and talked with me and said: Daniel, I've come out now to give you skill and understanding. At the start of your pleading the order came out, and I've come to tell you. Because you're greatly loved. So understand the matter and think about the vision. Seventy weeks are set apart for your people and for your holy town — to finish the rebellion and make an end of sins, and to cover over wrongdoing and bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and the prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. So know and understand: from the going out of the order to bring back and build Jerusalem, to the Anointed One, the Leader, will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. The street will be built again and the wall, even in hard times. And after sixty-two weeks the Anointed One will be cut off, but not for himself. And the people of the leader who'll come will wreck the town and the holy place. And its end will be with a flood, and to the end of the war ruin is set. And he'll make a firm covenant with plenty for one week. And in the middle of the week he'll make the sacrifice and the offering stop. And on a wing of disgusting things will be one who wrecks, right till the end that's set is poured out on the one who wrecks.
And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God; Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
