The ram and the goat
In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar, a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after the one that had appeared to me before. In the vision I saw myself at Shushan in the palace, in the province of Elam. In the vision I was by the river Ulai. Then I looked up and saw, and there in front of the river stood a ram with two horns. Both horns were tall, but one was taller than the other, and the taller one came up last. I saw the ram charging west and north and south. No beast could stand against him, and there was nobody who could deliver anything out of his hand. He did as he pleased and became great. And as I was thinking about it, there came a male goat from the west, crossing the face of the whole earth without touching the ground. And the goat had a striking horn between his eyes. And he came up to the ram with the two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran at him in the fury of his power. And I saw him come right up to the ram, and he was enraged against him. He struck the ram and broke his two horns, and the ram had no strength to stand before him. He threw him to the ground and trampled him, and there was nobody to deliver the ram out of his hand. So the goat became very great. But when he was strong, the great horn was broken, and in its place four striking horns came up toward the four winds of heaven. And out of one of them came a little horn, which grew enormously toward the south, the east and the pleasant land. And it grew great, right up to the host of heaven, and it threw down some of the host and some of the stars to the ground and trampled them. It even lifted itself up against the prince of the host, and the daily sacrifice was taken away from him, and the place of his sanctuary was thrown down. And a host was given over to it, along with the daily sacrifice, because of rebellion. It threw truth to the ground, and it did as it pleased and did well at it. Then I heard one holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who was speaking, How long is this vision to last — the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that brings desolation, and the giving over of both the sanctuary and the host to be trampled underfoot? And he said to me, For two thousand three hundred days. Then the sanctuary will be cleansed.

But he threw him down to the ground and trampled him, and there was nobody to rescue the ram out of his hand. So the goat made himself very great. And when he was strong, the great horn was broken. And instead of it four notable ones came up towards the four winds of the sky. And out of one of them came a little horn that grew very big, towards the south and towards the east and towards the good land. And it grew great, right to the army of the sky. And it threw down some of the army and some of the stars to the ground, and trampled on them. Yes, it made itself great, right to the leader of the army. And the daily sacrifice was taken away from him, and the place of his holy place was thrown down. And an army was given him against the daily sacrifice because of rebellion. And it threw the truth down to the ground, and it did it and did well. Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who was speaking: How long is the vision about the daily sacrifice and the rebellion that wrecks, to give both the holy place and the army to be trampled underfoot? And he said to me: For two thousand three hundred evenings and mornings. Then the holy place will be put right.

And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered. Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

And an army was given him against the daily sacrifice because of rebellion. And it threw the truth down to the ground, and it did it and did well.
And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.
Then I heard one holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who was speaking, How long is this vision to last — the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that brings desolation, and the giving over of both the sanctuary and the host to be trampled underfoot?

And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

And when I, Daniel, had seen the vision and was looking for the meaning of it, there stood before me something that looked like a man. And I heard a man's voice between the banks of the Ulai, calling out, Gabriel, make this man understand the vision. So he came near where I was standing. And when he came, I was afraid and fell on my face. But he said to me, Understand, son of man, that the vision belongs to the time of the end. Now while he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep with my face to the ground. But he touched me and set me upright. And he said, Look, I will make known to you what will happen at the end of the anger. Because it belongs to the appointed time of the end. The ram you saw with two horns represents the kings of Media and Persia. And the rough goat is the king of Grecia, and the great horn between his eyes is the first king. And as that horn was broken and four stood up in its place, four kingdoms will rise out of that nation, but not with his power. And in the latter part of their kingdom, when the rebels have come to the full, a king of fierce face will rise, skilled at dark sayings. And his power will be great, but not by his own power. He will destroy terribly, and do well at it, and act, and destroy the mighty and the holy people. And through his cunning he will make deceit succeed in his hand. He will lift himself up in his heart, and in a time of peace he will destroy many. He will even stand up against the Prince of princes. But he will be broken without a hand being laid on him. And the vision of the evenings and the mornings that was told is true. But seal up the vision, because it is for many days to come. And I, Daniel, was worn out and lay sick for days. Afterwards I got up and went about the king's business. And I was appalled by the vision, and nobody understood it.
And when I, Daniel, had seen the vision and looked for what it meant, there was standing in front of me one who looked like a man. And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days. And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king’s business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.
