In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions in his head as he lay on his bed. Then he wrote the dream down and told the substance of it. Daniel said: I saw in my vision by night, and there were the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea. And four great beasts came up out of the sea, each one different from the others. The first was like a lion and had eagle's wings. I watched until its wings were pulled off, and it was lifted up from the earth and made to stand on two feet like a man, and the mind of a man was given to it. And there was another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. And they said to it, Get up, eat your fill of flesh. After that I looked, and there was another, like a leopard, with four wings of a bird on its back. And the beast had four heads, and it was given authority. After that I saw in the visions of the night a fourth beast, dreadful, terrifying and incredibly strong. It had great iron teeth. It devoured and smashed things to pieces and trampled what was left under its feet. It was different from all the beasts before it, and it had ten horns. I was looking at the horns, and there came up among them another horn, a little one, and three of the first horns were pulled up by the roots before it. And in this horn were eyes like a man's eyes, and a mouth speaking great things.

I watched then because of the sound of the great words the horn was speaking. I watched until the beast was killed and its body destroyed and given over to the burning flame. As for the rest of the beasts, their authority was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. I saw in the visions of the night, and there was one like the Son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him authority and glory and a kingdom, so that all peoples and nations and languages should serve him. His authority is an everlasting authority, which will not pass away, and his kingdom will never be destroyed.

This is what he said: The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom on earth, which will be different from all other kingdoms. It will devour the whole earth and tread it down and break it in pieces. And the ten horns are ten kings who will rise out of that kingdom. And another will rise after them, different from the first, and he will bring down three kings. And he will speak great words against the Most High, and wear down the saints of the Most High, and think to change times and laws. And they will be given into his hand for a time, and times, and half a time. But the judgement will sit, and they will take away his authority, to consume it and destroy it to the end. And the kingdom and the authority and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all authorities will serve and obey him. This is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts troubled me greatly and my face went pale. But I kept the matter to myself.

This is what he said: The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on earth, different from all kingdoms. And it'll eat up the whole earth and trample it down and break it in pieces. And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that'll get up. And another will get up after them, and he'll be different from the first ones, and he'll bring down three kings. And he'll speak great words against the Most High and wear out the holy ones of the Most High, and think about changing times and laws. And they'll be handed into his hand for a time and times and half a time. But the judgment will sit, and they'll take his rule away, to eat it up and wreck it right to the end.
