Rooted and built up in him
I want you to know how hard I am struggling for you, and for those at Laodicea, and for everyone who hasn't met me face to face, so their hearts might be encouraged, knit together in love, and come to all the riches of full assurance and understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ, in whom all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden. I say this so nobody talks you round with a smooth line of argument. For even though I am not there in body, I am with you in spirit, and glad to see how orderly you are and how solid your faith in Christ is. So then, just as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, keep on living in him, rooted and built up in him, settled in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See that nobody takes you in through philosophy and empty deceit, based on human tradition and the basic principles of the world rather than on Christ. For in him all the fullness of the Godhead lives in bodily form, and you are complete in him, who is the head over all rule and authority. In him you were also circumcised, with a circumcision not done by hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: buried with him in baptism, and raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh — he made you alive together with him, having forgiven you all your trespasses. He wiped out the written record of rules that stood against us and condemned us. He took it out of the way and nailed it to his cross. And having stripped the rulers and authorities, he made a public show of them, leading them in triumph by the cross.
Because I'd have you know what great striving I have for you and for the ones at Laodicea and for as many as haven't seen my face in the flesh. So their hearts could be comforted, being knit together in love and to all riches of the full sureness of understanding, to the knowing of the secret of God and of the Father and of Christ. In him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. And this I say, in case any man should take you in with tempting words. Because though I'm away in the flesh, still I'm with you in the spirit, celebrating and seeing your order and the firmness of your faith in Christ. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
For in him all the fullness of the Godhead lives in bodily form,

buried with him in baptism, and raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

Shadows and the body
So don't let anyone judge you over what you eat or drink, or about a festival or a new moon or a sabbath day. These are a shadow of things to come, but the body is Christ’s. Don't let anyone rob you of your reward with voluntary humility and the worship of angels, intruding into things he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and losing hold of the Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its joints and ligaments, grows with the growth that comes from God. If you died with Christ to the basic principles of the world, why do you go on submitting to rules as though you still belonged to it? Don't touch. Don't taste. Don't handle. All these things perish with the using. They are based on human commands and teachings. They have the look of wisdom about them, with their self-made religion and false humility and hard treatment of the body — but they are no use at all against the appetites of the flesh.
So let no man judge you in food or in drink or about a feast day or a new moon or sabbath days. Which are a shadow of things to come. But the body is of Christ. Let no man cheat you of your reward in a false lowness of mind and worshipping of angels, pushing into things he hasn't seen, empty-headedly puffed up by his fleshly mind. And not holding the Head, from whom all the body by joints and bands having food supplied and being knit together grows with the growth of God. So if you're dead with Christ from the basic things of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you put yourselves under rules — don't touch, don't taste, don't handle? (All these are to die with the using.) After the orders and teachings of men. These things truly have a show of wisdom in will worship and lowliness and neglecting of the body, but aren't of any value against the satisfying of the flesh.

Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

If you died with Christ to the basic principles of the world, why do you go on submitting to rules as though you still belonged to it?
