Thanksgiving and prayer
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother, to the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colosse: grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying for you always, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints, because of the hope stored up for you in heaven, which you heard about in the word of truth, the gospel that has come to you. All over the world it is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has among you since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth. You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ, and he told us about your love in the Spirit. So since the day we heard it, we haven't stopped praying for you, asking that you be filled with the knowledge of his will, in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, so you will live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God, strengthened with all power according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience, with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He rescued us out of the power of darkness and brought us across into the kingdom of his dear Son, in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.

The greatness of Christ
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature. Because through him everything was created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible — thrones, authorities, rulers and powers. Everything was created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and by him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that in everything he might have the first place. For it pleased the Father that all fullness should live in him, and through him to reconcile all things to himself, having made peace through the blood of his cross — whether things on earth or things in heaven. And you, who were once cut off and enemies in your minds because of your evil deeds — now he has reconciled you through Christ's physical body in death, to present you holy, blameless and beyond criticism in his eyes, if you keep on in the faith, grounded and settled, and don't shift from the hope of the gospel you heard, which has been preached to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Now I am glad in what I am suffering for you, and in my own body I am filling up what is still lacking of Christ's sufferings, for the sake of his body, which is the church. I became its minister by the commission God gave me for you, to fulfil the word of God — the mystery kept hidden through ages and generations, but now brought out into the open to his saints. God chose to make known to them, among the Gentiles, the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. He is the one we preach, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so we can present everyone complete in Christ Jesus. That's what I labour for, striving with all the energy he works so powerfully in me.
Who now celebrate in my sufferings for you and fill up what's behind of the troubles of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church.
