Locusts, fire and a plumb line
This is what the Lord God showed me: he was forming grasshoppers at the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth — the latter growth after the king's mowings. And when they had finished eating every green thing in the land, I said, Lord God, forgive, I beg you. How will Jacob stand? He is so small. The Lord thought better of it. It won't happen, said the Lord. This is what the Lord God showed me: the Lord God called to contend by fire. It devoured the great deep and ate up a part. Then I said, Lord God, stop, I beg you. How will Jacob stand? He is so small. The Lord thought better of this too. This won't happen either, said the Lord God. This is what he showed me: the Lord was standing by a wall built true to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord said to me, Amos, what do you see? And I said, A plumb line. Then the Lord said, Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel. I won't pass them by any longer. Isaac’s worship shrines will be laid waste and Israel’s sanctuaries ruined, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
This is what the Lord God showed me: he was shaping locusts at the start of the late growth. And look — it was the late growth after the king's mowings. And when they'd finished eating the grass of the land, I said: Lord God, please forgive. How can Jacob stand? He's so small. The Lord was sorry about it. It won't be, says the Lord. This is what the Lord God showed me: the Lord God was calling for judgment by fire, and it ate up the great deep and started on the land. Then I said: Lord God, please stop. How can Jacob stand? He's so small. The Lord was sorry about this too. This won't be either, says the Lord God. This is what he showed me: the Lord was standing on a wall made with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord said to me: What do you see, Amos? And I said: A plumb line. Then the Lord said: Look — I'll set a plumb line in the middle of my people Israel. I won't go past them again. And the high places of Isaac will be a wreck, and the holy places of Israel will be laid waste. And I'll get up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings. And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small. The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD. Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part. Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small. The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD. Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the LORD stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the LORD, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

Amaziah and Amos
Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel: Amos is plotting against you right in the middle of the people of Israel. The land can't put up with everything he says. Because this is what Amos says: Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile out of their own land. And Amaziah said to Amos, Get out of here, seer. Clear off to the land of Judah. Eat your bread there, and prophesy there. But do not prophesy at Bethel any more, because it is the king's chapel and the king's court. Then Amos answered Amaziah: I was no prophet, and I wasn't a prophet's son. I was a herdsman and a gatherer of sycomore fruit. And the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, Go and prophesy to my people Israel. So now hear the word of the Lord. You say, Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not let your word drop against the house of Isaac. So this is what the Lord says: Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, your sons and daughters will fall by the sword, and your land will be measured out and divided up. You yourself will die in an unclean land, and Israel will surely go into exile out of their own land.
Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel: Amos has plotted against you right in the middle of the house of Israel. The land can't bear all his words. Because this is what Amos says: Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will definitely go into exile out of their own land. And Amaziah said to Amos: Off you go, seer. Run away to the land of Judah. Eat your bread there, and prophesy there. But don't prophesy at Bethel any more, because it's the king's holy place and the royal house. Then Amos answered Amaziah: I wasn't a prophet and I wasn't a prophet's son. I was a herdsman and a man who looked after sycamore figs. And the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me: Go, prophesy to my people Israel. So now listen to the word of the Lord. You say: Don't prophesy against Israel, and don't let your word drop against the house of Isaac. So this is what the Lord says: Your wife will be a prostitute in the town, and your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, and your land will be divided by line. And you'll die in an unclean land, and Israel will definitely go into exile out of their own land.
Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land. Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court. Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel. Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac. Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel: Amos is plotting against you right in the middle of the people of Israel. The land can't put up with everything he says.
Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel: Amos has plotted against you right in the middle of the house of Israel. The land can't bear all his words.

Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
But do not prophesy at Bethel any more, because it is the king's chapel and the king's court.
But don't prophesy at Bethel any more, because it's the king's holy place and the royal house.
But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.

Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
And the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, Go and prophesy to my people Israel.
And the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me: Go, prophesy to my people Israel.
And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.
So now hear the word of the Lord. You say, Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not let your word drop against the house of Isaac.
So now listen to the word of the Lord. You say: Don't prophesy against Israel, and don't let your word drop against the house of Isaac.
