The basket of summer fruit

This is what the Lord God showed me: a basket of ripe summer fruit. And he said, Amos, what do you see? And I said, A basket of ripe summer fruit. Then the Lord said to me, The end has come for my people Israel. I won't pass them by any longer. The songs of the temple will turn to howling on that day, says the Lord God. There will be many dead bodies in every place, cast out in silence. Hear this, you who swallow up the needy and make the poor of the land fail, saying, When will the new moon be over so we can sell grain, and the sabbath be done so we can put wheat on the market? — making the ephah small and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit. So we can buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of shoes, and sell the refuse of the wheat? The Lord has sworn by the excellency of Jacob: I will never forget a thing they have done. Won't the land tremble for this, and everyone living in it mourn? The whole of it will rise like a flood, be cast out and drowned, as by the flood of Egypt. And on that day, says the Lord God, I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight. I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into wailing. I will bring coarse mourning cloth on every waist and baldness upon every head. I will make it like mourning for an only son, and the end of it a bitter day.

This is what the Lord God showed me: a basket of summer fruit. And he said: What do you see, Amos? And I said: A basket of summer fruit. Then the Lord said to me: The end has come on my people Israel. I won't go past them again. And the songs of the temple will be howling on that day, says the Lord God. There'll be plenty of dead bodies in every place. They'll throw them out in silence. Listen to this, you who swallow up the needy and make the poor of the land come to nothing, saying: When will the new moon be over so we can sell grain? And the sabbath, so we can put the wheat out — making the measure small and the price big, and cheating with dishonest scales? So we can buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and sell the sweepings of the wheat? The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: I'll never forget any of the things they've done. Won't the land shake for this, and everyone living in it mourn? All of it will rise like the Nile, and it'll be tossed about and sink again like the river of Egypt. And on that day, says the Lord God, I'll make the sun go down at noon and make the earth dark on a clear day. And I'll turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into wailing. And I'll bring sackcloth on every waist and baldness on every head. And I'll make it like the mourning for an only son, and the end of it like a bitter day.

Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and behold a basket of summer fruit. And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more. And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord GOD: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence. Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail, Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit? That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat? The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works. Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise up wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast out and drowned, as by the flood of Egypt. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day: And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.

A famine of hearing

The days are coming, says the Lord God, when I will send a famine on the land — not a famine of bread or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. They will wander from sea to sea and from the north to the east. They will run to and fro seeking the word of the Lord, and they will not find it. On that day the beautiful young women and the young men will faint from thirst. Those who swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, As surely as your god lives, Dan, and, As surely as the way of Beersheba lives — they will fall and never get up again.

In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.
