Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: "Men of Judaea, and everyone living in Jerusalem, hear me out and understand what's happening. These people aren't drunk, as you reckon. It's only the third hour of the day. This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 'It'll come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants and female servants I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath: blood, fire and vapour of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before that great and notable day of the Lord comes. And it'll come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' "Men of Israel, listen to this. Jesus of Nazareth was a man approved by God among you through miracles, wonders and signs which God did by him right among you, as you yourselves know. He was delivered up by God's determined counsel and foreknowledge, and you took him and, by wicked hands, crucified and killed him. But God raised him up, loosing the pains of death, because death could not possibly hold him. For David speaks about him: I saw the Lord always in front of my face. Because he's on my right hand, so I shouldn't be shaken. That's why my heart celebrated and my tongue was glad. And what's more my flesh will rest in hope. For you won't leave my soul in hell, and you won't let your Holy One see corruption. You've made known to me the ways of life. You'll make me full of joy with your face. Men and brothers, let me speak freely to you about the patriarch David, that he's both dead and buried, and his grave is with us to this day. So being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn under an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, he'd raise up Christ to sit on his throne — He seeing this before spoke of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul wasn't left in hell and his flesh didn't see corruption. This Jesus God has raised up, and all of us are witnesses of it. Exalted at God's right hand, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out what you now see and hear. For David hasn't gone up into the heavens. But he says himself: The Lord said to my Lord: Sit on my right hand, Till I make your enemies your footstool. So let the whole people of Israel know this for certain: God has made this same Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."

When they heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, "Men and brothers, what are we meant to do?" Peter said, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you, your children, and all who are far off — as many as the Lord our God will call." With many other words he testified and urged them, saying, "Save yourselves from this untoward generation." Those who gladly received his word were baptised, and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. They kept devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching, sharing life together, breaking bread and praying. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common. They sold their possessions and goods and shared them with everyone according to each person's need. Day after day they continued with one accord in the temple, breaking bread from house to house and eating with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
