Taken up
The first account I wrote, Theophilus, covered everything Jesus began to do and teach, right up to the day he was taken up, after giving commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he showed them he was alive by many convincing proofs. They saw him over forty days, and he spoke with them about the kingdom of God. While he was gathered with them, he told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father's promise. "You've heard me speak about it," he said. "John baptised with water, but before many days have passed, you'll be baptised with the Holy Spirit." So when they were together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the time you're going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" He replied, "It's not for you to know the times or seasons the Father has set by his own authority. But you'll receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you'll be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judaea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts of the earth. After he said this, while they watched, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight. They were still staring into heaven as he went when, suddenly, two men in white clothing stood beside them. "Men of Galilee, why are you standing there staring into heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you saw him go."

These all went on with one accord in prayer and pleading, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus and with his brothers. And in those days Peter stood up among the disciples and said (the number of names together were about a hundred and twenty): "Men and brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand through David about Judas, who became guide to those who arrested Jesus. For he was counted with us and had received a share in this service. Now this man bought a field with the reward of his wickedness. Falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his insides spilled out. It was known to everyone living at Jerusalem, so that field is called in their own tongue Akeldama, that is, The field of blood. For it is written in the book of Psalms: ‘Let his home be left empty, and let no one live in it,’ and, ‘Let another take his office.’ So one of the men who travelled with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, from John's baptism until the day Jesus was taken up from us, must be appointed with us as a witness of his resurrection." They put forward two — Joseph called Barsabbas, who was called Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take part in this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas fell by wrongdoing to go to his own place." They cast their lots, and the lot fell to Matthias. He was numbered with the eleven apostles.
