A good soldier
So then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And what you heard from me in front of many witnesses, hand on to reliable men who will be able to teach others as well. Take your share of the hard going, like a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man serving as a soldier gets himself tangled up in the affairs of this life, so that he may please the one who chose him to be a soldier. And an athlete doesn't get the crown unless he competes by the rules. The farmer who does the work should get the first share of the crop. Think about what I am saying. The Lord will give you understanding in everything. Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel. And it is why I am in trouble, right down to being in chains like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. So I put up with everything for the sake of God's chosen, so they can get the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, and eternal glory with it. It is a saying you can trust: if we died with him, we will also live with him. If we hold out, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us. If we are faithless, he stays faithful — he cannot disown himself.

Keep reminding them of these things, and warn them before the Lord not to fight over words. There is nothing in it, and it only wrecks the people listening. Do your best to present yourself to God as a workman with nothing to be ashamed of, handling the word of truth straight. But steer clear of godless chatter. It only takes people further into ungodliness. And their word will eat like a canker. Hymenaeus and Philetus are two of them, They have gone wide of the truth, saying the resurrection has already happened, and they are upsetting some people's faith. Even so, God's foundation stands firm, and it carries this seal: The Lord knows those who are his. And: Everyone who names the name of Christ should have done with wrongdoing. In a big house there aren't just vessels of gold and silver, but of wood and clay too — some for honourable use, some not. So if a man cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel to honour, made holy, fit for the master's use, and ready for every good work. So run from the cravings of youth, and chase after righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Have nothing to do with foolish and unlearned questions. You know they only breed conflict. And the Lord's servant mustn't be one for fighting. He should be gentle with everyone, able to teach, and able to put up with a lot. He should gently instruct those who oppose themselves, in the hope that God may give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth, so they come to their senses and get clear of the devil's trap, where they have been held captive to do his will.
