Stir up the gift

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my dear son: grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, that I never stop remembering you in my prayers, night and day. I am keen to see you — I keep thinking of your tears — so that I can be filled with joy. I call to mind the sincere faith in you, which was in your grandmother Lois first, and then your mother Eunice, and I am sure it is in you too. So I am reminding you: stir up the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands. Because God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and a sound mind. So don't be ashamed of testifying about our Lord, or of me, his prisoner. Take your share of hardship for the gospel, by the power of God. He saved us and called us with a holy calling — not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, and now brought out into the open by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who has done away with death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. That is what I was appointed to: a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. And that is why I am going through all this. But I am not ashamed, because I know who I have trusted, and I am certain he can keep what I have handed over to him until that day.

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life that's in Christ Jesus, to Timothy my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, who I serve from my forefathers with a pure conscience, that without stopping I remember you in my prayers night and day. Greatly wanting to see you, being mindful of your tears, so I can be filled with joy. When I bring to mind the faith without pretending in you, that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I'm sure it's in you too. For this reason I put you in mind to stir up the gift of God in you by the laying on of my hands. Because God hasn't given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. So don't be ashamed of the witness of our Lord or of me his prisoner. But share in the sufferings of the good news according to the power of God. Who's saved us and called us with a holy calling — not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace, given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. But is now made plain by the showing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who's done away with death and has brought life and undying to light through the good news. For that I'm set a preacher and an apostle and a teacher of the nations. For that reason I suffer these things too. Still I'm not ashamed. Because I know who I've believed and am sure he's able to keep what I've handed to him against that day.

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Hold fast

Hold on to the pattern of sound words you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good thing that was handed to you, by the Holy Spirit who lives in us. You know that everyone in Asia has turned away from me — Phygellus and Hermogenes among them. May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chain. When he was in Rome he went to a lot of trouble to look for me, and he found me. May the Lord grant that he finds mercy from the Lord on that day. And you know better than anyone how much he did for me at Ephesus.

Hold fast the form of sound words you've heard of me, in faith and love that's in Christ Jesus. That good thing handed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who lives in us. You know this, that all the ones in Asia have turned away from me. Of them are Phygellus and Hermogenes. The Lord give mercy to the house of Onesiphorus. Because he often refreshed me and wasn't ashamed of my chain. But when he was in Rome, he looked for me very carefully and found me. The Lord give him to find mercy of the Lord in that day. And you know very well how many things he served me in at Ephesus.

Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me. The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
