The covenant renewed

Josiah cleans the land
The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the second-ranking priests and the doorkeepers to remove from the Lord's temple everything made for Baal, the grove and all the host of heaven. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and carried their ashes to Bethel. He removed the idolatrous priests the kings of Judah had appointed to burn incense at the worship shrines in Judah's cities and around Jerusalem — those who burned incense to Baal, the sun, moon, planets and all the host of heaven. He removed the grove from the Lord's temple, took it outside Jerusalem to the brook Kidron, burned it there, ground it to powder and scattered the dust over the graves of ordinary people. He tore down the houses of the male temple prostitutes beside the Lord's temple, where the women wove hangings for the grove. Josiah brought all the priests out of Judah's cities and desecrated the worship shrines where they had burned incense, from Geba to Beersheba. He also tore down the worship shrines at the gates, including those near the gate of Joshua, governor of the city, on the left as a person entered the city gate. The priests of the worship shrines did not serve at the Lord's altar in Jerusalem, though they did eat unleavened bread among their fellow priests. Josiah desecrated Topheth in the valley of the children of Hinnom, so no one could make a son or daughter pass through the fire to Molech. He removed the horses the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun at the entrance to the Lord's temple, near the room of Nathan-melech the official in the suburbs, and burned the chariots of the sun. The king tore down the altars the kings of Judah had built on the roof of Ahaz's upper room, and the altars Manasseh had built in the two courts of the Lord's temple. He smashed them there and threw their dust into the brook Kidron. The king desecrated the worship shrines east of Jerusalem, on the right of the Mount of Corruption, which Solomon king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth, the detestable goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh, the detestable god of Moab, and Milcom, the detestable god of the Ammonites. He smashed the images, cut down the pagan worship poles and filled their places with human bones. He also tore down the altar and high place at Bethel that Jeroboam son of Nebat had made, who caused Israel to sin. He burned the high place, ground it to powder and burned the grove. When Josiah turned and saw the graves on the hillside, he sent men to take the bones from the graves and burned them on the altar, defiling it according to the word of the Lord proclaimed by the man of God. Then Josiah asked: What is that monument I see? The men of the city answered: It is the grave of the man of God who came from Judah and foretold these things you have done to the altar at Bethel. Josiah said: Leave him alone. Don't disturb his bones. So they left his bones untouched, along with the bones of the prophet who had come from Samaria. Josiah also removed all the high-place shrines in the cities of Samaria that the kings of Israel had built to provoke the Lord to anger. He did to them just as he had done at Bethel. He killed all the priests of the worship shrines on their altars and burned human bones on them. Then he returned to Jerusalem.

And he made Topheth common, which is in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, so no man could make his son or his daughter pass through the fire to Molek. And he killed all the priests of the high places that were there on the altars, and burnt men's bones on them, and came back to Jerusalem.

And as Josiah turned himself, he spied the sepulchres that were there in the mount, and sent, and took the bones out of the sepulchres, and burned them upon the altar, and polluted it, according to the word of the LORD which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words. Then he said, What title is that that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is the sepulchre of the man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of Bethel. And he said, Let him alone; let no man move his bones. So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria. And all the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the Lord to anger, Josiah took away, and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in Bethel. And he slew all the priests of the high places that were there upon the altars, and burned men’s bones upon them, and returned to Jerusalem.

The Passover
The king commanded all the people: Keep the Passover to the Lord your God, just as it is written in this book of the covenant. No Passover like this had been kept since the days of the judges who judged Israel, nor throughout all the days of the kings of Israel and Judah. It was in the eighteenth year of King Josiah that this Passover was kept to the Lord in Jerusalem. Josiah also removed the mediums, wizards, household gods, idols and every other disgusting thing seen in Judah and Jerusalem, carrying out the words of the law written in the book Hilkiah the priest had found in the Lord's temple. Before Josiah there was no king like him who turned to the Lord with all his heart, all his soul and all his might, according to the whole law of Moses. Nor did anyone like him arise after him. Even so, the Lord did not turn away from the fierceness of his great anger against Judah because of everything Manasseh had done to provoke him. The Lord said: I will remove Judah from my sight as I removed Israel. I will reject Jerusalem, the city I chose, and the temple of which I said, My name will be there. The rest of Josiah's acts and everything he did are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Judah. In Josiah's days Pharaoh-necho king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria at the river Euphrates. King Josiah went out against him, but Pharaoh-necho killed him at Megiddo when he saw him. Josiah's servants carried his body by chariot from Megiddo to Jerusalem and buried him in his own tomb. Then the people of the land took Josiah's son Jehoahaz, anointed him and made him king in his father's place.
And the king ordered all the people: Keep the Passover to the Lord your God, the way it's written in this book of the covenant. There definitely wasn't a Passover kept like that from the days of the judges who judged Israel, or in all the days of the kings of Israel or of the kings of Judah. But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, this Passover was kept to the Lord in Jerusalem. What's more, Josiah put away the mediums and the wizards and the household gods and the idols and all the disgusting things seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, so he could carry out the words of the teaching that were written in the book Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the Lord. And there wasn't any king like him before him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might, according to all the teaching of Moses. And after him nobody got up like him. But still the Lord didn't turn from the fierceness of his great anger, that his anger was lit against Judah with, because of all the things Manasseh had stirred him to. And the Lord said: I'll move Judah too out of my sight, the way I've moved Israel. And I'll throw off this town Jerusalem that I've chosen, and the house I said about: My name will be there. Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and everything he did, aren't they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? Moreover the workers with familiar spirits, and the wizards, and the images, and the idols, and all the abominations that were spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD. And like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him. Notwithstanding the LORD turned not from the fierceness of his great wrath, wherewith his anger was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations that Manasseh had provoked him withal. And the LORD said, I will remove Judah also out of my sight, as I have removed Israel, and will cast off this city Jerusalem which I have chosen, and the house of which I said, My name shall be there. Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? In his days Pharaohnechoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates: and king Josiah went against him; and he slew him at Megiddo, when he had seen him. It was in the eighteenth year of King Josiah that this Passover was kept to the Lord in Jerusalem.
