The book found
Josiah was eight years old when he became king and reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother was Jedidah daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. Josiah did what was right in the Lord's sight. He followed the way of his ancestor David and did not turn aside to the right or left. In the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king sent Shaphan the scribe, son of Azaliah and grandson of Meshullam, to the temple of the Lord. He said: Go up to Hilkiah the high priest and have him count the money brought into the temple of the Lord, which the doorkeepers have collected from the people. Have them give it to the supervisors of the work on the Lord's temple, who are to pay the workers repairing the temple — the carpenters, builders and masons — and buy timber and cut stone for the repairs. They do not need to account for the money placed in their hands, because they are dealing honestly. Hilkiah the high priest told Shaphan the scribe: I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the Lord. Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it. Shaphan returned to the king and reported: Your servants have emptied out the money found in the temple and handed it to the supervisors and workers responsible for the Lord's temple. Then Shaphan the scribe told the king: Hilkiah the priest has given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king. When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes. He commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Michaiah, Shaphan the scribe and Asaiah the king's servant: Go and ask the Lord for me, for the people and for all Judah about the words of this book that has been found. The Lord's anger against us must be great, because our ancestors did not obey the words of this book or do everything written for us.

And Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe: I've found the book of the teaching in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it. And Shaphan the scribe came to the king and brought the king word back: Your servants have gathered the money found in the house and have handed it over into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of the house of the Lord. And Shaphan the scribe told the king: Hilkiah the priest has given me a book. And Shaphan read it in front of the king. And when the king had heard the words of the book of the teaching, he tore his clothes. Because the anger of the Lord that's lit against us is great, because our fathers haven't listened to the words of this book, to do according to everything written about us.

And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Michaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asahiah a servant of the king’s, saying, Go ye, enquire of the LORD for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.

And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem in the college, and they spoke with her. She told them: This is what the Lord God of Israel says: Tell the man who sent you to me, This is what the Lord says: I am bringing disaster on this place and its people — everything written in the book the king of Judah has read. Because they have abandoned me and burned incense to other gods, provoking me to anger with everything their hands have made, my anger will burn against this place and will not be quenched. But to the king of Judah who sent you to ask the Lord, say this: This is what the Lord God of Israel says about the words you heard: Because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I spoke against this place and its people — that they would become a desolation and a curse — and because you tore your robes and wept before me, I have heard you, says the Lord. So I will gather you to your ancestors, and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I will bring on this place. They took her answer back to the king.

Because they've left me and have burnt incense to other gods, so they could make me angry with all the works of their hands. So my anger will be lit against this place and won't be put out. But to the king of Judah who sent you to ask of the Lord, this is what you'll say to him: This is what the Lord God of Israel says about the words you've heard. Because your heart was tender and you've brought yourself low in front of the Lord when you heard what I spoke against this place and against the people who live there, that they'd be a waste and a curse, and have torn your clothes and wept in front of me — I've heard you too, says the Lord. So look — I'll gather you to your fathers, and you'll be gathered into your grave in peace. And your eyes won't see all the trouble I'll bring on this place. And they brought the king word back.

Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
