Manasseh
Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king and reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother was Hephzibah. He did what was evil in the Lord's sight, following the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. He rebuilt the worship shrines his father Hezekiah had destroyed. He set up altars for Baal, made a grove as Ahab king of Israel had done, and worshipped and served all the host of heaven. He built altars in the temple of the Lord, where the Lord had said: In Jerusalem I will put my name. In the two courts of the Lord's temple he built altars for all the host of heaven. He made his son pass through the fire, observed times, used enchantments and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards. He did great wickedness in the Lord's sight and provoked him to anger. He placed the carved image of the grove he had made in the temple of which the Lord had told David and his son Solomon: In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen from all Israel's tribes, I will put my name forever. I will no longer make Israel wander from the land I gave their ancestors, if only they will carefully do everything I commanded them and follow all the law my servant Moses gave them. But they would not listen. Manasseh led them astray until they did more evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed before the Israelites. The Lord spoke through his servants the prophets: Because Manasseh king of Judah has committed these disgusting things, doing more wickedly than the Amorites before him, and has also made Judah sin with his idols, this is what the Lord God of Israel says: I am bringing such disaster on Jerusalem and Judah that the ears of everyone who hears about it will tingle. I will stretch over Jerusalem the measuring line used against Samaria and the plummet used against Ahab's house. I will wipe Jerusalem as someone wipes a dish — wiping it and turning it upside down. I will abandon the survivors of my inheritance and hand them over to their enemies. They will become prey and plunder to all their enemies, because they have done what was evil in my eyes and provoked me to anger from the day their ancestors came out of Egypt right up to today. Manasseh also shed a great deal of innocent blood, filling Jerusalem from one end to the other, besides the sin by which he made Judah sin in doing evil in the Lord's sight. The rest of Manasseh's acts, everything he did and the sin he committed are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Judah. Manasseh died and was buried in the garden of his own house, the garden of Uzza. His son Amon became king in his place.
