Amaziah of Judah
In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash became king of Judah. He was twenty-five years old when he became king and reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. He did what was right in the Lord's sight, though not like his ancestor David. He generally followed the example of his father Joash. Even so, the worship shrines were not removed. The people still sacrificed and burned incense there. Once the kingdom was firmly under his control, Amaziah executed the servants who had murdered his father the king. But he did not kill the murderers' children, in keeping with what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the Lord commanded: Fathers must not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers. Each person is to die for his own sin. Amaziah killed ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. He captured Sela in battle and renamed it Joktheel, which it is called to this day. Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel: Come on — let's face each other in battle. Jehoash king of Israel sent this reply to Amaziah king of Judah: A thistle in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon: Give your daughter to my son as a wife. Then a wild animal in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle. You've certainly beaten Edom, and now you're full of yourself. Enjoy the glory and stay home. Why stir up trouble that will bring you down — you and Judah with you? But Amaziah would not listen. So Jehoash king of Israel marched up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth-shemesh in Judah. Judah was defeated by Israel, and every man fled to his own tent. At Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, son of Jehoash, son of Ahaziah. Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down four hundred cubits of the city wall, from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate. He took all the gold and silver and all the vessels found in the Lord's temple and the royal treasuries, along with hostages, and returned to Samaria. His son Jeroboam became king in his place. Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived another fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. But men were sent after him to Lachish and killed him there. They brought his body back on horses and buried him in Jerusalem with his ancestors in the City of David. Then all the people of Judah took Azariah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. After Amaziah died, Azariah rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah.
