Jehoahaz and Jehoash
In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah king of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king over Israel in Samaria and reigned seventeen years. He did what was evil in the Lord's sight and followed the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin. He did not turn away from them. The Lord's anger burned against Israel, and he repeatedly gave them into the hands of Hazael king of Syria and Ben-hadad his son. Then Jehoahaz pleaded with the Lord, and the Lord listened to him because he saw how brutally the king of Syria was oppressing Israel. The Lord gave Israel a deliverer, and they escaped from Syrian power. Then the Israelites lived in their homes as they had before. Even so, they did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam's house, which had caused Israel to sin. They kept walking in them, and the grove remained in Samaria. Jehoahaz was left with only fifty horsemen, ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers, because the king of Syria had destroyed the rest and made them like dust at threshing time. Jehoahaz was left with only fifty horsemen, ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers, because the king of Syria had destroyed the rest and made them like dust at threshing time.

Elisha's last words
Elisha became sick with the illness that would kill him. Joash king of Israel came down to him, wept over him and cried: My father! My father! The chariot of Israel and its horsemen! Elisha told him: Get a bow and some arrows. So Joash took a bow and arrows. Elisha said to the king of Israel: Put your hand on the bow. The king did, and Elisha put his hands over the king's hands. Then Elisha said, 'Open the east window.' He opened it. Elisha said, 'Shoot.' The king shot. Elisha declared, 'The Lord's arrow of victory — the arrow of victory over Syria! You will strike the Syrians at Aphek until you have destroyed them.' Then Elisha said: Take the arrows. The king took them. Elisha told him: Strike the ground. He struck it three times and stopped. The man of God was angry with him and said: You should have struck five or six times. Then you would have struck Syria until it was completely destroyed. Now you'll defeat Syria only three times. Then Elisha died and was buried. Moabite raiding parties used to enter the land each spring. One day, as some men were burying a man, they suddenly saw a raiding party. They threw the body into Elisha's tomb and ran. When the dead man touched Elisha's bones, he came back to life and stood on his feet.
Now Elisha had fallen sick with the sickness he died of. And Joash the king of Israel came down to him and wept over his face: My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen. And Elisha said to him: Take a bow and arrows. And he took himself a bow and arrows. And he said to the king of Israel: Put your hand on the bow. And he put his hand on it. And Elisha put his hands on the king's hands. And he said: Open the window eastward. And he opened it. Then Elisha said: Shoot. And he shot. And he said: The arrow of the Lord's rescue, and the arrow of rescue from Aram. Because you'll strike the Arameans in Aphek till you've finished them. And he said: Take the arrows. And he took them. And he said to the king of Israel: Strike the ground. And he struck three times and stopped. And the man of God was angry with him: You should have struck five or six times. Then you'd have struck Aram till you'd finished them. But now you'll strike Aram only three times. And Elisha died, and they buried him. And the bands of the Moabites raided the land at the start of the year. And as they were burying a man, look — they saw a band. And they threw the man into the grave of Elisha. And when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he came alive and stood up on his feet.

And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.

Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel throughout the reign of Jehoahaz. But the Lord was gracious to Israel and had compassion on them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He would not destroy them or cast them from his presence at that time. Hazael king of Syria died, and his son Ben-hadad became king in his place. Jehoash son of Jehoahaz recovered from Ben-hadad son of Hazael the cities Hazael had taken from his father Jehoahaz in battle. Joash defeated Ben-hadad three times and recovered Israel's cities.
But Hazael king of Aram crushed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. And the Lord was gracious to them and had pity on them, and turned to them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And he wouldn't wreck them or throw them from his presence yet. So Hazael king of Aram died. And Ben-Hadad his son ruled in his place. And Jehoash son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Ben-Hadad son of Hazael the towns he'd taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times Joash beat him and got back the towns of Israel.
But Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. And the LORD was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet. So Hazael king of Syria died; and Benhadad his son reigned in his stead. And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael the cities, which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times did Joash beat him, and recovered the cities of Israel.
