The temple repairs
Joash became king in the seventh year of Jehu and reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother was Zibiah of Beersheba. Joash did what was right in the Lord's sight all the years Jehoiada the priest instructed him. Even so, the worship shrines were not removed. The people still sacrificed and burned incense there. Joash told the priests: Take all the money brought into the temple of the Lord as sacred offerings — money from personal assessments, money from vows, and anything people freely decide to bring. Let each priest receive it from those he knows, and use it to repair any damaged part of the temple. But by the twenty-third year of King Joash, the priests still had not repaired the damaged parts of the temple. So King Joash called Jehoiada and the other priests and said: Why haven't you repaired the temple? From now on, don't keep the money you receive. Hand it over for the temple repairs. The priests agreed not to collect any more money from the people and not to be responsible for the repairs. Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in its lid and placed it beside the altar on the right as a person entered the Lord's temple. The priests guarding the entrance put into it all the money brought to the temple. Whenever they saw there was a large amount of money in the chest, the king's scribe and the high priest came, bagged it and counted the money found in the Lord's temple. They handed the weighed money to the supervisors overseeing the work on the Lord's temple. They paid the carpenters and builders working on the temple, as well as the masons and stonecutters, and bought timber and dressed stone for repairing the temple, along with everything else needed for the work. The money brought into the Lord's temple was not used to make silver cups, wick trimmers, bowls, trumpets or other vessels of gold or silver. Instead, it was given to the workers and used to repair the Lord's temple. They did not require an accounting from the men who received the money to pay the workers, because they dealt honestly. The guilt-offering money and sin-offering money were not brought into the Lord's temple; they belonged to the priests.

Instead, it was given to the workers and used to repair the Lord's temple.
But they gave it to the workmen and repaired the house of the Lord with it.

Hazael and the end of Joash
Then Hazael king of Syria attacked Gath and captured it. After that he set out to attack Jerusalem. Joash king of Judah took all the sacred things dedicated by Jehoshaphat, Jehoram and Ahaziah, his ancestors the kings of Judah, along with his own sacred gifts and all the gold found in the treasuries of the Lord's temple and the royal palace, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria. Hazael withdrew from Jerusalem. The rest of Joash's acts and everything he did are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Judah. Joash's servants conspired against him and killed him at the house of Millo, on the road down to Silla. His servants Jozachar son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer struck him down and he died. He was buried with his ancestors in the City of David, and his son Amaziah became king in his place.
