The ark taken

If it comes with us, maybe it'll save us from our enemies. So the people sent men to Shiloh and brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, enthroned between the cherubim. 'God has come into their camp,' they said. 'We're in trouble now — nothing like this has happened before!' We're in trouble! Who can save us from these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck Egypt with every kind of plague in the wilderness. So stiffen up, Philistines, and fight like men, or you'll end up serving the Hebrews just as they've served you. When he arrived, Eli was sitting beside the road watching, because he was trembling for the ark of God. The man entered the city with the news, and the whole city cried out. Eli heard the uproar and asked: What's all that noise? The man hurried over and told him. Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyesight had failed so badly he could not see. The man told Eli: I've just come from the battle. I escaped from the fighting today. Eli asked: What happened, son? The messenger answered: Israel fled from the Philistines, and the army suffered a terrible slaughter. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured. The moment he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backwards from his seat beside the gate. His neck broke and he died, for he was old and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years. Phinehas's wife was pregnant and close to giving birth. When she heard that the ark of God had been captured and that her husband and father-in-law were dead, labour overtook her and she gave birth. As she was dying, the women attending her said: Don't be afraid — you've had a son. But she gave no answer and paid no attention. She named the boy Ichabod, saying: The glory has left Israel — because the ark of God had been captured, and because her father-in-law and husband were dead. She said: The glory has left Israel, because the ark of God has been captured.
