Dagon falls
The Philistines took the ark of God from Ebenezer and carried it to Ashdod. They carried the ark into Dagon's temple and set it beside Dagon. Early the next morning the people of Ashdod found Dagon flat on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord. They picked Dagon up and put him back where he belonged. The next morning, there he was again — Dagon flat on his face before the ark of the Lord. This time his head and both hands had been cut off on the threshold; only his body was left. That is why, to this day, neither Dagon's priests nor anyone entering his temple at Ashdod steps on the threshold.

And the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold. Only the trunk of Dagon was left. That's why neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagon's house tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, right to this day.

The hand of the Lord
But the Lord's hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod. He devastated them and afflicted Ashdod and its surrounding territory with tumours. When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said: The ark of Israel's God can't stay here. His hand is too heavy on us and on Dagon our god. They called all the Philistine rulers together and asked: What are we supposed to do with the ark of Israel's God? Send it on to Gath, they decided. So off it went to Gath. After they moved the ark to Gath, the Lord's hand came against that city too, causing terrible panic. He struck both young and old with tumours. Then they sent the ark to Ekron. As soon as it arrived, the Ekronites cried out: They've brought the ark of Israel's God here to kill us and our people! They called all the Philistine rulers together: Send the ark of Israel's God away. Get it back where it belongs before it kills us and our people. The whole city was in deadly panic, because God's hand was very heavy there. Those who did not die were struck with tumours, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
But the hand of the Lord was heavy on the people of Ashdod, and he wrecked them and struck them with tumours, both Ashdod and its borders. And when the men of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said: The ark of the God of Israel won't stay with us. Because his hand is hard on us and on Dagon our god. So they sent and gathered all the lords of the Philistines to them: What'll we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered: Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried round to Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel round there. And after they'd carried it round there, the hand of the Lord was against the town with a very great ruin. And he struck the men of the town, both small and great, and they had tumours in their secret parts. So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And when the ark of God came to Ekron, the Ekronites cried out: They've brought the ark of the God of Israel round to us, to kill us and our people. So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines: Send the ark of the God of Israel away, and let it go back to its own place, so it doesn't kill us and our people. Because there was a deadly panic through the whole town. The hand of God was very heavy there. And the men who didn't die were struck with the tumours. And the cry of the town went up to heaven.

And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts. Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people. So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there. And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
