The Lord calls Samuel

The boy Samuel served the Lord under Eli. In those days a word from the Lord was rare; visions weren't common. One night Eli was lying in his usual place. His eyesight had grown so weak he could barely see. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the Lord's temple, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called: Samuel! Samuel answered: Here I am. He ran to Eli. Here I am — you called me. Eli said: I didn't call you. Go back to bed. So Samuel went and lay down again. The Lord called again: Samuel! Samuel got up, went to Eli and said: Here I am — you called me. Eli answered: I didn't call you, son. Back to bed. Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel a third time. He got up, went to Eli and said: Here I am — you called me. Then Eli realised the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel: Go and lie down. If he calls you again, say, Speak, Lord, because your servant is listening. Samuel went back and lay down. The Lord came and stood there, calling as before: Samuel! Samuel! Samuel answered: Speak, because your servant is listening. The Lord said: I'm about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears it tingle. On that day I will carry out against Eli everything I have spoken about his house, from beginning to end. I told him I would judge his house forever because of the sin he knew about: his sons brought disgrace on themselves, and he did not restrain them. So I have sworn about Eli's house: the guilt of Eli's family will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.

And the child Samuel served the Lord in front of Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days. There wasn't any open vision. And at that time, when Eli was lying down in his place, and his eyes had started to go dim so he couldn't see — and before the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was, and Samuel had lain down to sleep — then the Lord called Samuel. And he answered: Here I am. And he ran to Eli and said: Here I am, because you called me. And he said: I didn't call. Lie down again. And he went and lay down. And the Lord called again: Samuel. And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said: Here I am, because you called me. And he answered: I didn't call, my son. Lie down again. Now Samuel didn't know the Lord yet, and the word of the Lord hadn't been shown to him yet. And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he got up and went to Eli and said: Here I am, because you called me. And Eli understood the Lord had called the child. So Eli said to Samuel: Go, lie down. And if he calls you, then say: Speak, Lord, because your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the Lord came and stood and called like the other times: Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered: Speak, because your servant is listening. And the Lord said to Samuel: Look — I'll do a thing in Israel that both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. On that day I'll carry out against Eli everything I've spoken about his house. When I start, I'll finish it too. Because I've told him I'll judge his house forever for the wrongdoing he knows about — because his sons made themselves cheap and he didn't hold them back. And so I've sworn to the house of Eli that the wrongdoing of Eli's house won't be covered over with sacrifice or offering forever.

And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision. And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end. For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.

Samuel tells Eli

Samuel lay there until morning, then opened the doors of the Lord's house. He was afraid to tell Eli about the vision. Then Eli called: Samuel, my son. Samuel answered: Here I am.
