Hannah prayed: My heart rejoices in the Lord; the Lord has lifted up my strength. I can answer my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. No one is holy like the Lord. There is no one besides you; there is no rock like our God. Enough of the proud talk. Don't let arrogance spill out of your mouth, for the Lord is a God who knows, and he weighs what people do. The bows of the mighty are broken, while those who stumbled are armed with strength. Those who once had their fill now work for bread, while the hungry hunger no more. The barren woman has borne seven, while the mother of many wastes away. The Lord brings death and gives life; he brings down to the grave and raises up. The Lord sends poverty and wealth; he brings low and lifts up. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the rubbish heap. He seats them with princes and gives them a place of honour, for the foundations of the earth are the Lord's, and on them he set the world. The sons of Eli
Eli's sons were rotten to the core. They didn't know the Lord. This was how the priests treated the people: whenever someone offered a sacrifice and the meat was boiling, the priest's servant would come over with a three-pronged fork. He'd jab it into the pan, kettle, cauldron or pot, and whatever came up on the fork the priest kept. That's how they treated every Israelite who came to Shiloh. Worse, before the fat had even been burned, the priest's servant would say: Give the priest some meat to roast. He won't take boiled meat from you; he wants it raw. If the worshipper said: Let the fat be burned first, then take whatever you want, the servant would answer: No. Hand it over now, or I'll take it by force. The young men's sin was very great before the Lord, because they treated the Lord's offering with contempt. But Samuel served before the Lord while still a boy, wearing a linen priestly apron. Each year his mother made him a little robe and brought it when she came up with her husband for the annual sacrifice. Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife: May the Lord give you more children by this woman in place of the one she has given to the Lord. Then they went home. The Lord was gracious to Hannah. She conceived and had three more sons and two daughters, while Samuel grew up before the Lord. Eli was very old. He heard about everything his sons were doing to Israel, including sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. Eli said to them: What are you two playing at? I keep hearing from everyone about the evil things you're doing. No, my sons. What I'm hearing from the Lord's people is no good at all. If one person sins against another, God can mediate. But if someone sins against the Lord, who can plead for him? Still they would not listen to their father, for the Lord had determined to put them to death. Meanwhile Samuel continued to grow in favour with both the Lord and the people.
Now the sons of Eli were worthless men. They didn't know the Lord. And the priests' way with the people was this: when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest's servant came while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand. And the Lord visited Hannah, so she conceived and had three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew up in front of the Lord. Now Eli was very old and heard everything his sons did to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who gathered at the door of the tent of meeting. And he said to them: Why do you do things like this? Because I hear about your evil doings from all this people. No, my sons. Because it isn't a good report I hear. You make the Lord's people break out. If one man sins against another, the judge will judge him. But if a man sins against the Lord, who'll plead for him? But they wouldn't listen to the voice of their father, because the Lord meant to kill them. And the child Samuel grew on and was in favour both with the Lord and with men.

If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them. And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men.

A man of God came to Eli and said: This is what the Lord says. Didn't I clearly reveal myself to your father's family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh? I chose your ancestor from all Israel's tribes to be my priest — to offer on my altar, burn incense and wear the priestly apron before me. I also gave your father's house a share of all Israel's offerings made by fire. Why do you trample on my sacrifice and offering, which I commanded for my dwelling? Why do you honour your sons more than me, fattening yourselves on the best parts of every offering from my people Israel? So the Lord God of Israel says: I promised that your house and your father's house would serve before me forever. But now, far from it. Those who honour me I will honour, and those who despise me will be treated with contempt. The days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father's house, so no man in your family will live to old age. You will see distress in my dwelling even while good is being done for Israel, and no man in your house will reach old age. Any man of yours whom I do not cut off from my altar will live only to make your eyes fail and your heart grieve, and all the grown men of your house will die in the prime of life. This will be the sign for you: your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will both die on the same day. I will raise up a faithful priest who will do what is in my heart and mind. I will establish his house, and he will serve before my anointed always. Everyone left in your house will come and bow before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, saying: Please give me some priestly work so I can have something to eat.
And a man of God came to Eli and said to him: This is what the Lord says. Didn't I plainly show myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh's house? And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer on my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod in front of me? And did I give the house of your father all the offerings made by fire of the people of Israel? Why do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering that I ordered in my dwelling, and honour your sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel my people? So the Lord God of Israel says: I said your house and the house of your father would walk in front of me forever. But now the Lord says: Far be it from me. Because the ones who honour me I'll honour, and the ones who look down on me will be treated as nothing. Look — the days are coming when I'll cut off your arm and the arm of your father's house, so there won't be an old man in your house. And you'll see a rival in my dwelling, in all the good that God does to Israel. And there won't be an old man in your house forever. And the man of yours I don't cut off from my altar will be there to make your eyes fail and to grieve your heart. And all the ones grown in your house will die in the flower of their age. And this will be a sign to you that'll come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they'll both die. And I'll raise myself up a faithful priest, who'll do what's in my heart and in my mind. And I'll build him a sure house, and he'll walk in front of my anointed forever. And it'll be that everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him for a bit of silver and a loaf of bread, and say: Put me into one of the priests' offices, please, so I can eat a piece of bread.
And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house? And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel? Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people? Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house. And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever. And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age. And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them. And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever. And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.

The days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father's house, so no man in your family will live to old age.
Look — the days are coming when I'll cut off your arm and the arm of your father's house, so there won't be an old man in your house.
Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.
You will see distress in my dwelling even while good is being done for Israel, and no man in your house will reach old age.
And you'll see a rival in my dwelling, in all the good that God does to Israel. And there won't be an old man in your house forever.
And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.
Any man of yours whom I do not cut off from my altar will live only to make your eyes fail and your heart grieve, and all the grown men of your house will die in the prime of life.
And the man of yours I don't cut off from my altar will be there to make your eyes fail and to grieve your heart. And all the ones grown in your house will die in the flower of their age.
And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.
This will be the sign for you: your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will both die on the same day.
And this will be a sign to you that'll come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they'll both die.
And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.
