The Lord looks at the heart
The Lord said to Samuel: How long are you going to mourn for Saul, seeing I've rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and get moving. I'm sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, because I've chosen one of his sons as king. Samuel said: How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he'll kill me. The Lord said: Take a heifer with you and say, I've come to sacrifice to the Lord. Invite Jesse to the sacrifice. I'll show you what to do, and you will anoint for me the one I identify. Samuel did what the Lord told him and went to Bethlehem. The town elders came trembling to meet him and asked: Do you come in peace? In peace, Samuel answered. I've come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me. Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought: Surely this is the Lord's anointed standing before him. But the Lord said to Samuel: Don't judge by his appearance or his height, because I've rejected him. The Lord doesn't see as people see. People look at the outward appearance; the Lord looks at the heart. Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass before Samuel. Samuel said: The Lord hasn't chosen this one either. Then Jesse had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said: The Lord hasn't chosen this one either. Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel told him: The Lord hasn't chosen any of these. Samuel asked Jesse: Is that all your sons? Jesse answered: There's still the youngest, but he's out looking after the sheep. Samuel said: Send for him. We won't sit down until he gets here. So Jesse sent for him. He was healthy-looking, with bright eyes and a good appearance. The Lord said: Up you get and anoint him. He's the one. Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in front of his brothers. From that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully on David. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.
And the Lord said to Samuel: How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I've thrown him off from ruling over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I'm sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, because I've picked myself a king among his sons. And Samuel said: How can I go? If Saul hears it, he'll kill me. And the Lord said: Take a heifer with you and say: I've come to sacrifice to the Lord. And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I'll show you what you'll do. And you'll anoint for me the one I name to you. And Samuel did what the Lord said and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town shook at his coming: Do you come peacefully? And he said: Peacefully. I've come to sacrifice to the Lord. Make yourselves holy and come with me to the sacrifice. And he made Jesse and his sons holy and called them to the sacrifice. And when they'd come, he looked at Eliab: The Lord's anointed is definitely in front of him. But the Lord said to Samuel: Don't look at how he looks or at the height of his body, because I've thrown him off. Because the Lord doesn't see the way man sees. Because man looks at the outside, but the Lord looks at the heart. Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass in front of Samuel. And he said: The Lord hasn't chosen this one either. And Samuel said to Jesse: Are these all your children? And he said: There's still the youngest left, and look — he's keeping the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse: Send and fetch him. Because we won't sit down till he comes here. And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had good eyes and was good to look at. And the Lord said: Get up, anoint him. Because this is the one. Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him among his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord came on David from that day on. So Samuel got up and went to Ramah.

And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him. But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

Invite Jesse to the sacrifice. I'll show you what to do, and you will anoint for me the one I identify.
And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I'll show you what you'll do. And you'll anoint for me the one I name to you.
And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
Samuel did what the Lord told him and went to Bethlehem. The town elders came trembling to meet him and asked: Do you come in peace?

And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought: Surely this is the Lord's anointed standing before him.
And when they'd come, he looked at Eliab: The Lord's anointed is definitely in front of him.
And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him.
But the Lord said to Samuel: Don't judge by his appearance or his height, because I've rejected him. The Lord doesn't see as people see. People look at the outward appearance; the Lord looks at the heart.
But the Lord said to Samuel: Don't look at how he looks or at the height of his body, because I've thrown him off. Because the Lord doesn't see the way man sees. Because man looks at the outside, but the Lord looks at the heart.
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass before Samuel. Samuel said: The Lord hasn't chosen this one either.
Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass in front of Samuel. And he said: The Lord hasn't chosen this one either.
Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
Then Jesse had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said: The Lord hasn't chosen this one either.
Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said: The Lord hasn't chosen this one either.
Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel told him: The Lord hasn't chosen any of these.
And Jesse made seven of his sons pass in front of Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse: The Lord hasn't chosen these.
Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.
Samuel asked Jesse: Is that all your sons? Jesse answered: There's still the youngest, but he's out looking after the sheep. Samuel said: Send for him. We won't sit down until he gets here.
And Samuel said to Jesse: Are these all your children? And he said: There's still the youngest left, and look — he's keeping the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse: Send and fetch him. Because we won't sit down till he comes here.
And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
So Jesse sent for him. He was healthy-looking, with bright eyes and a good appearance. The Lord said: Up you get and anoint him. He's the one.
And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had good eyes and was good to look at. And the Lord said: Get up, anoint him. Because this is the one.
And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in front of his brothers. From that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully on David. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him among his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord came on David from that day on. So Samuel got up and went to Ramah.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
David plays for Saul
Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul, and a troubling spirit from the Lord tormented him. Saul's servants said: A troubling spirit from God is tormenting you. Let our lord command us to find someone who can play the harp well. Whenever the troubling spirit from God comes on you, he can play and you'll feel better. Saul told his servants: Find me someone who plays well and bring him here. One of the servants said: I've seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play. He's a capable fighter, speaks well and has a good presence — and the Lord is with him. So Saul sent messengers to Jesse saying: Send me your son David, the one with the sheep. Jesse loaded a donkey with bread, a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with David to Saul. David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armour-bearers. Saul sent word to Jesse: Please let David remain in my service, because I'm pleased with him. Whenever the spirit from God troubled Saul, David would take the harp and play. Saul would settle down and feel better, and the troubling spirit would leave him.
But the Spirit of the Lord went from Saul, and a bad spirit from the Lord troubled him. And Saul's servants said to him: Look — a bad spirit from God is troubling you. Let our lord order your servants now, who are in front of you, to look for a man who's a good player on the harp. And when the bad spirit from God is on you, he'll play with his hand, and you'll be well. And Saul said to his servants: Get me a man now who can play well, and bring him to me. Then one of the servants answered: Look — I've seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who can play, and a mighty man of valour and a man of war, and sensible in his talk and a good-looking person. And the Lord is with him. So Saul sent messengers to Jesse: Send me David your son, who's with the sheep. And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat, and sent them by David his son to Saul. And David came to Saul and stood in front of him. And he loved him a lot, and he became his armour-bearer. And Saul sent to Jesse: Let David stand in front of me now, please, because he's found favour in my sight. And when the bad spirit from God was on Saul, David took a harp and played with his hand. So Saul got relief and was well, and the bad spirit went off him.
But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him. And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me. Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him. Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep. And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul. And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer. And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight. And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul, and a troubling spirit from the Lord tormented him.

Let our lord order your servants now, who are in front of you, to look for a man who's a good player on the harp. And when the bad spirit from God is on you, he'll play with his hand, and you'll be well.
Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armour-bearers.
And David came to Saul and stood in front of him. And he loved him a lot, and he became his armour-bearer.
And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
Saul sent word to Jesse: Please let David remain in my service, because I'm pleased with him.
And Saul sent to Jesse: Let David stand in front of me now, please, because he's found favour in my sight.
And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
Whenever the spirit from God troubled Saul, David would take the harp and play. Saul would settle down and feel better, and the troubling spirit would leave him.
And when the bad spirit from God was on Saul, David took a harp and played with his hand. So Saul got relief and was well, and the bad spirit went off him.
And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
