The Philistines occupied one hill, Israel another, with the valley between them. Then a champion named Goliath came out of the Philistine camp. He was from Gath and stood six cubits and a span tall. Goliath wore a bronze helmet and a coat of scale armour weighing five thousand shekels of bronze. He had bronze greaves on his legs and a bronze javelin slung between his shoulders. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels. His shield-bearer walked ahead of him. Goliath stood and shouted to Israel's ranks: Why have you come out and lined up for battle? I'm the Philistine champion, and you're Saul's servants. Pick one man and send him down to me. If he can fight me and kill me, we'll become your servants. But if I beat him and kill him, you'll become our servants and serve us. Then the Philistine said: Today I defy the armies of Israel. David comes to the camp
David was a son of Jesse, an Ephrathite from Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse had eight sons and by Saul's time was already an old man. Jesse's three oldest sons had followed Saul to war: Eliab the firstborn, Abinadab the second and Shammah the third. David was the youngest. The three oldest were with Saul, while David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father's sheep at Bethlehem. For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand. Jesse told David: Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves to your brothers at the camp, and be quick about it. Take these ten cheeses to their commander. See how your brothers are going and bring back some word from them. Saul, David's brothers and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah fighting the Philistines. David rose early, left the sheep with a keeper, loaded up and set out as Jesse had instructed. He reached the camp just as the army was marching out to its battle positions with a shout. Israel and the Philistines lined up facing each other, army against army. David left his supplies with the keeper of the baggage, ran to the battle line and greeted his brothers. While he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from the Philistine ranks and shouted his usual challenge. David heard every word. Whenever the Israelites saw Goliath, they ran from him in terror. The Israelites were saying: Have you seen this man who keeps coming out? He comes to defy Israel. The king will make the man who kills him very rich, give him his daughter and exempt his father's family from taxes in Israel. David asked the men standing nearby: What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes this disgrace off Israel? Who does this uncircumcised Philistine think he is, defying the armies of the living God? The men repeated what they had been saying: That's what the king will do for the man who kills him. When Eliab, David's oldest brother, heard him talking with the men, his temper flared. What are you doing here? he demanded. And who did you leave those few sheep with out in the wilderness? I know your pride and what you're up to. You've only come down to watch the battle. David said: What have I done now? I only asked a question. David turned to someone else and asked the same question, and the men gave him the same answer. David's words were overheard and reported to Saul, who sent for him.

And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel. And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him. And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause? And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner. And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.

David said: What have I done now? I only asked a question.
And David said: What have I done now? Isn't there a reason?
And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

And he turned from him to another and spoke the same way. And the people answered him again the same way as before.
And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
David's words were overheard and reported to Saul, who sent for him.
And when the words David spoke were heard, they told them in front of Saul. And he sent for him.
And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.
David and Goliath
David said to Saul: Nobody needs to lose heart over this Philistine. Your servant will go and fight him. Saul said: You can't go out against this Philistine and fight him. You're only a young man, and he's been a fighting man since he was young. David answered Saul: Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. If it turned on me, I grabbed it by the hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine will end up the same, because he has defied the armies of the living God. David said: The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine. Saul said: Go, then. And may the Lord be with you. Saul dressed David in his own armour. He put a bronze helmet on his head and fitted him with a coat of mail. David strapped Saul's sword over the armour and tried to walk around, but he wasn't used to it. I can't go in this gear, he told Saul. I'm not used to it. So he took it off. He took his staff, chose five smooth stones from the creek, put them in his shepherd's bag, and with his sling in hand went toward the Philistine. The Philistine kept coming closer to David, with his shield-bearer ahead of him. When the Philistine looked David over and saw he was only a young man, healthy and good-looking, he despised him. He said to David: Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. Come here, he said, and I'll feed your flesh to the birds and the wild animals. David answered: You come at me with sword, spear and javelin. I come at you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel's armies, whom you've defied. Today the Lord will give you into my hand. I'll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I'll give the bodies of the Philistine army to the birds and wild animals, and the whole earth will know there is a God in Israel. Everyone gathered here will know the Lord doesn't save by sword or spear. The battle belongs to the Lord, and he will give you into our hands. As the Philistine moved closer to attack, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. David reached into his bag, took out a stone, slung it and struck the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face-down on the ground. So David defeated the Philistine with a sling and a stone. He struck him down and killed him, though David had no sword in his hand. David ran and stood over the Philistine, took Goliath's sword, drew it from its sheath, killed him and cut off his head. When the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. The men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and chased the Philistines as far as the valley and the gates of Ekron. Philistine dead lay along the road to Shaaraim, Gath and Ekron. The Israelites returned from pursuing the Philistines and plundered their camp. David took the Philistine's head to Jerusalem, but put his armour in his own tent. When Saul saw David going out against Goliath, he asked Abner, commander of the army: Abner, whose son is that young man? Abner replied: As surely as you live, Your Majesty, I don't know. The king said: Find out whose son this young man is. When David returned from killing Goliath, Abner brought him before Saul, with the Philistine's head still in his hand. Saul asked him: Whose son are you, young man? David answered: I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.
And David said to Saul: Don't let any man's heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight this Philistine. And Saul said to David: You aren't able to go against this Philistine to fight him. Because you're only a youth, and he's been a man of war from his youth. And David said to Saul: Your servant kept his father's sheep. And a lion came, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock. And I went out after him and struck him and rescued it out of his mouth. And when he got up against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him. Your servant killed both the lion and the bear. And this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he's insulted the armies of the living God. David said too: The Lord who rescued me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, he'll rescue me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to David: Go, and the Lord be with you. And Saul dressed David with his armour, and he put a helmet of bronze on his head. And he dressed him with a coat of mail. And David strapped his sword on his armour and tried to go, because he hadn't tried it. And David said to Saul: I can't go with these, because I haven't tried them. And David took them off him. And he took his staff in his hand and chose himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag he had, in his pouch. And his sling was in his hand. And he came near the Philistine. And the Philistine came on and came near David. And the man who carried the shield went in front of him. And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he looked down on him. Because he was only a youth, and ruddy and good-looking. And the Philistine said to David: Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. And the Philistine said to David: Come to me, and I'll give your flesh to the birds of the sky and to the animals of the field. Then David said to the Philistine: You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, who you've insulted. Today the Lord will hand you over into my hand. And I'll strike you and take your head off you. And I'll give the bodies of the army of the Philistines today to the birds of the sky and to the wild animals of the earth, so all the earth can know there's a God in Israel. And all this gathering will know the Lord doesn't save with sword and spear. Because the battle is the Lord's, and he'll hand you over into our hands. And when the Philistine got up and came and went near to meet David, David hurried and ran towards the army to meet the Philistine. And the men of Israel and of Judah got up and shouted and chased the Philistines right to the valley and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down along the way to Shaaraim, right to Gath and to Ekron. And the people of Israel came back from chasing the Philistines and looted their tents. And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem. But he put his armour in his tent. And when Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner the captain of the army: Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said: As surely as your soul lives, king, I can't tell. And the king said: Ask whose son the young man is. And when David came back from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him in front of Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. And Saul said to him: Whose son are you, young man? And David answered: I'm the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.
And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. David said to Saul: Nobody needs to lose heart over this Philistine. Your servant will go and fight him.
And David said to Saul: Don't let any man's heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight this Philistine.

Saul said: You can't go out against this Philistine and fight him. You're only a young man, and he's been a fighting man since he was young.
And Saul said to David: You aren't able to go against this Philistine to fight him. Because you're only a youth, and he's been a man of war from his youth.
And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
David answered Saul: Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock,

Then David said to the Philistine: You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, who you've insulted.
Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
