The order against Amalek
Samuel said to Saul: The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel. So now listen carefully to the Lord's message. This is what the Lord Almighty says: I remember what Amalek did to Israel, ambushing them on the way up from Egypt. Now go and strike Amalek. Completely destroy everything they have. Do not spare them; put man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey to death. Saul mustered the army at Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers, plus ten thousand men from Judah. Saul went to an Amalekite city and set an ambush in the valley. Saul warned the Kenites: Move away from the Amalekites so I don't destroy you with them. You showed kindness to all Israel when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites moved away. Saul struck the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to Shur, east of Egypt. He captured Agag king of Amalek alive but completely destroyed the rest of the people with the sword. But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, cattle, fattened animals and lambs — everything they considered good. They were unwilling to destroy those, but everything despised and worthless they destroyed completely.
Samuel said to Saul too: The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people, over Israel. So listen now to the voice of the words of the Lord. This is what the Lord Almighty says. I remember what Amalek did to Israel, how he lay in wait for him on the way when he came up from Egypt. Go now and strike Amalek, and completely wreck everything they've got. And don't spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and baby, ox and sheep, camel and donkey. And Saul gathered the people together and counted them in Telaim — two hundred thousand men on foot and ten thousand men of Judah. And Saul came to a town of Amalek and lay in wait in the valley. And Saul said to the Kenites: Go, get away, go down from among the Amalekites, so I don't wreck you with them. Because you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites went away from among the Amalekites. And Saul struck the Amalekites from Havilah as you go to Shur, which is opposite Egypt. And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and completely wrecked all the people with the edge of the sword. But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fatlings and the lambs, and everything that was good, and wouldn't completely wreck them. But everything that was cheap and worthless, that they completely wrecked.
Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD. Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah. And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley. And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt. And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

To listen is better than sacrifice
Then the Lord spoke to Samuel: I regret making Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my commands. Samuel was deeply troubled and cried out to the Lord all night. Early the next morning Samuel went to meet Saul, but he was told: Saul went to Carmel, set up a monument to himself, then moved on and went down to Gilgal. When Samuel reached him, Saul said: The Lord bless you! I've carried out the Lord's command. Samuel said: Then what's this bleating of sheep in my ears? And what's that lowing of cattle I can hear? Saul answered: The troops brought them from the Amalekites. They spared the best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God. We destroyed the rest. Enough, Samuel said to Saul. I'll tell you what the Lord said to me last night. Go on, Saul replied. Samuel said: You may have once thought little of yourself, but didn't you become head of Israel's tribes? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. The Lord sent you on a mission and said: Go and completely destroy those sinful Amalekites. Fight them until they are wiped out. Why didn't you obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the Lord's sight? But I did obey the Lord, Saul said. I went where he sent me, brought back Agag king of Amalek, and completely destroyed the Amalekites. The troops took sheep and cattle from the plunder — the best of what was devoted to destruction — to sacrifice to the Lord your God at Gilgal. Samuel said: Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying his voice? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness like idolatry. Because you've rejected the Lord's word, he has rejected you as king.
Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel: I'm sorry I made Saul king. Because he's turned back from following me and hasn't carried out my orders. And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the Lord all night. And when Samuel got up early to meet Saul in the morning, Samuel was told: Saul came to Carmel, and look — he set himself up a monument, and has gone about and gone past and gone down to Gilgal. And Samuel came to Saul. And Saul said to him: Blessed be you of the Lord. I've carried out the order of the Lord. And Samuel said: What's this bleating of sheep in my ears then, and the lowing of oxen that I hear? And Saul said: They've brought them from the Amalekites. Because the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice to the Lord your God. And the rest we've completely wrecked. Then Samuel said to Saul: Stop, and I'll tell you what the Lord said to me tonight. And he said to him: Say on. And Samuel said: When you were small in your own sight, weren't you made the head of the tribes of Israel? And the Lord anointed you king over Israel. And the Lord sent you on a journey: Go and completely wreck the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight them till they're finished. So why didn't you listen to the voice of the Lord, but flew on the plunder and did evil in the sight of the Lord? And Saul said to Samuel: Yes, I've listened to the voice of the Lord and have gone the way the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek and have completely wrecked the Amalekites. But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things that should have been completely wrecked, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal. And Samuel said: Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in listening to the voice of the Lord? Look — to listen is better than sacrifice, and to pay attention than the fat of rams. Because rebelling is like the sin of magic, and stubbornness is like wickedness and idol worship. Because you've thrown off the word of the Lord, he's thrown you off from being king.
Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night. And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal. And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD. And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on. And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed. Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD? And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal. Saul rejected
Saul said to Samuel: I've sinned. I broke the Lord's command and your instructions because I was afraid of the people and listened to them. Now please forgive my sin and come back with me so I can worship the Lord. Samuel said: I will not go back with you. You rejected the Lord's word, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel. As Samuel turned to leave, Saul grabbed the edge of his robe and it tore. Samuel told him: Today the Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel away from you and given it to a neighbour of yours who is better than you. The Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind, because he is not a man that he should change his mind. Saul said: I have sinned. But please honour me now before the elders of my people and before Israel. Come back with me so I can worship the Lord your God. So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshipped the Lord. Samuel said: Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites. Agag came to him cautiously, saying: Surely the bitterness of death has passed. Samuel said: As your sword made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women. Then Samuel put Agag to death before the Lord at Gilgal. Then Samuel returned to Ramah, and Saul went home to Gibeah. Samuel did not see Saul again until the day Samuel died, though Samuel mourned for Saul. And the Lord regretted making Saul king over Israel.
And Saul said to Samuel: I've sinned. Because I've stepped over the order of the Lord and your words, because I was frightened of the people and listened to their voice. So now forgive my sin, please, and turn back with me, so I can bow down to the Lord. And Samuel said to Saul: I won't turn back with you. Because you've thrown off the word of the Lord, and the Lord has thrown you off from being king over Israel. And as Samuel turned about to go, he took hold of the edge of his robe, and it tore. And Samuel said to him: The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and given it to a neighbour of yours who's better than you. And the Strength of Israel won't lie or change his mind. Because he isn't a man, that he should change his mind. Then he said: I've sinned. But honour me now, please, in front of the elders of my people and in front of Israel, and turn back with me, so I can bow down to the Lord your God. So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul bowed down to the Lord. Then Samuel said: Bring me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came to him carefully. And Agag said: The bitterness of death is definitely past. And Samuel said: The way your sword has made women childless, that's how your mother will be childless among women. And Samuel cut Agag in pieces in front of the Lord in Gilgal. Then Samuel went to Ramah. And Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. And Samuel didn't come to see Saul again till the day of his death. But Samuel mourned for Saul. And the Lord was sorry he'd made Saul king over Israel.
And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou. And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent. Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God. So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD. Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past. And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal. Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
Saul said to Samuel: I've sinned. I broke the Lord's command and your instructions because I was afraid of the people and listened to them.

Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.
Samuel said: As your sword made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women. Then Samuel put Agag to death before the Lord at Gilgal.
And Samuel said: The way your sword has made women childless, that's how your mother will be childless among women. And Samuel cut Agag in pieces in front of the Lord in Gilgal.
And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.
Then Samuel returned to Ramah, and Saul went home to Gibeah.
Then Samuel went to Ramah. And Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.
Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.
