Wives and husbands

In the same way, wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands, so that if any of them don't obey the word, they may be won over without a word by the way their wives live, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty shouldn't come from outward things — braided hair, gold jewellery, fine clothes — but from what is inside, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. This is how the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful, falling in behind their own husbands, like Sara, who obeyed Abraham and called him lord. You are her daughters as long as you do what is right and aren't afraid with any amazement. In the same way, husbands, live with your wives with understanding, giving honour to the wife as the weaker vessel and as heirs together of the grace of life, so your prayers are not hindered.

The same way, you wives, be under your own husbands — so if any don't obey the word, they can be won without the word too by the way of life of the wives. While they look at your pure way of life with fear. Don't let your adorning be that outward one of doing the hair and of wearing gold or of putting on clothing. But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in what doesn't rot, of a meek and quiet spirit, that's in the sight of God of great price. Because that's how in the old time the holy women too, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being under their own husbands. The way Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord — whose daughters you are, as long as you do well and aren't afraid with any fear. You husbands the same way, live with them according to knowledge, giving honour to the wife as to the weaker vessel and as being heirs together of the grace of life — so your prayers aren't held up.

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Suffering for doing right

Finally, all of you: be of one mind, feel for one another, love as brothers, be tender-hearted, be courteous. Don't pay back wrong for wrong, or insult for insult. On the contrary, give a blessing, because that is what you were called to, so you may inherit a blessing. For whoever wants to love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from telling lies. He must turn from evil and do good. He must look for peace and go after it. Because the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are open to their prayers. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. And who is going to harm you if you are keen on doing good? But even if you do suffer for what is right, you are blessed. Don't be frightened of what frightens them, and don't be shaken. But honour the Lord God as holy in your hearts. And always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you the reason for the hope you have, with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak against you and run down your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. Because it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is God's will, than for doing wrong. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit. And in that state he went and preached to the spirits in prison, who long ago did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few — eight in all — were saved through water. And this is the like figure by which baptism now saves us too — not the putting away of dirt from the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God — through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand, with angels and authorities and powers made subject to him.

Finally, be all of one mind, having pity for each other, love as brothers, be full of pity, be kind. Not paying back evil for evil or insult for insult. But on the other hand blessing — knowing that you're called to this, so you should inherit a blessing. Because the one who'd love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips so they speak no deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good. Let him look for peace and go after it. Because the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the face of the Lord is against the ones who do evil. And who's the one who'll harm you, if you're followers of what's good? But and if you suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are you. And don't be frightened of their terror, and don't be troubled. But make the Lord God holy in your hearts. And be ready always to give an answer to every man who asks you a reason of the hope in you, with meekness and fear. Having a good conscience — so where they speak evil of you as of evildoers, they can be ashamed who falsely charge your good way of life in Christ. Because it's better, if the will of God is like that, that you suffer for well doing than for evil doing. Because Christ too has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, so he could bring us to God — being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit. By which he went too and preached to the spirits in prison. Who were disobedient at one time, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was getting ready. Who's gone into heaven and is on the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers being made under him.

Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing. For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
