Living stones
So get rid of all malice and deceit, hypocrisy, envy and every kind of slander. Like newborn babies, crave the pure milk of the word, so you may grow by it. now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. As you come to him, the living Stone — rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him — you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Because this is in the scripture: Look, I lay in Sion a chief cornerstone, chosen and precious. And whoever believes in him will not be put to shame. So to you who believe he is precious. But to those who are disobedient: the stone the builders rejected has become the head of the corner, and a stone that makes them stumble and a rock that trips them up. They stumble because they won't obey the word — which is what they were appointed to. But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, so you can declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God. Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
So laying aside all badness and all deceit and pretending and envies and all evil speaking, as newborn babies want the sincere milk of the word, so you can grow by it. If it's so that you've tasted that the Lord is gracious. Coming to him, as to a living stone thrown off truly by men but chosen of God and precious. You too, as living stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. And a stone to stumble at and a rock of offence, to the ones who stumble at the word, being disobedient — which they were set for too. Who in time past weren't a people, but are now the people of God. Who hadn't got mercy, but now have got mercy.

Live honestly
Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and travellers in this world to keep away from the cravings of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Live honourably among the Gentiles, so that though they speak against you as wrongdoers, they may see your good works and glorify God in the day of visitation. Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human authority: whether to the king as the supreme one, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and commend those who do right. Because it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but don't use your freedom as a cover-up for doing wrong. Live as God's servants. Show proper respect to everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

Having your way of life honest among the nations — so where they speak against you as evildoers, they can by your good works, that they'll see, give glory to God in the day of visiting. So put yourselves under every rule of man for the Lord's sake — whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as sent by him for the punishing of evildoers and for the praise of the ones who do well. Christ's example
Servants, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect — not only to the good and gentle ones, but to the harsh as well. Because it counts for something if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering, because he is conscious of God. What credit is it if you are beaten for doing wrong and take it patiently? But if you suffer for doing good and take it patiently, that is acceptable with God. To this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow in his steps. He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth. When he was insulted, he did not insult in return. When he suffered, he made no threats, but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness. By his wounds you were healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
Servants, be under your masters with all fear — not only to the good and gentle but to the difficult too. Because this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience towards God puts up with grief, suffering wrongly. Because what glory is it if, when you're beaten for your faults, you take it patiently?
