Obadiah and Ahab
After many days, in the third year, the Lord spoke to Elijah: Go and show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land. So Elijah went to meet Ahab. The famine in Samaria was severe. Ahab summoned Obadiah, the governor of his household. Obadiah greatly feared the Lord. When Jezebel was killing off the Lord's prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred of them and hidden them fifty to a cave, supplying them with bread and water. Ahab said to Obadiah: Go through the land to every spring and brook. We might find enough grass to keep the horses and mules alive instead of losing all the animals. They divided the land between them. Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another. As Obadiah travelled along, Elijah suddenly met him. Obadiah recognised him, bowed to the ground and said: Is that really you, my lord Elijah? It is, Elijah answered. Go and tell your lord: Elijah is here. Obadiah said: What have I done wrong that you'd hand your servant over to Ahab to be killed? As surely as the Lord your God lives, there isn't a nation or kingdom where my lord hasn't sent men looking for you. Whenever they said you weren't there, he made that kingdom or nation swear they couldn't find you. And now you want me to go and tell him: Elijah is here. The moment I leave you, the Spirit of the Lord could carry you off somewhere I know nothing about. Then I tell Ahab, he comes here, can't find you, and kills me. And he answered: I haven't troubled Israel, but you and your father's house have, in that you've left the orders of the Lord and you've followed the Baals. So now send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of the sacred pole, who eat at Jezebel's table. So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.

And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth. Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table. So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

Elijah stood before all the people and said: How long are you going to limp between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him. If Baal is God, follow him. The people had nothing to say. Then Elijah said: I'm the only prophet of the Lord left here, while Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. Bring us two bulls. Let Baal's prophets choose one, cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but light no fire. I'll prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood, also with no fire. Then you call on the name of your gods, and I'll call on the name of the Lord. The God who answers by fire — he's God. All the people answered: Fair enough. Elijah told the prophets of Baal: You lot can go first; there are plenty of you. Choose your bull, prepare it and call on the name of your gods, but don't light the fire. They took the bull they were given, prepared it and called on Baal from morning until noon: Baal, answer us! But there was no voice and no answer. They danced and leapt around the altar they'd made. By noon Elijah started giving them a serve: Shout louder! He is a god, after all. Maybe he's busy, ducked off somewhere, gone travelling — or perhaps he's having a kip and needs waking up. So they shouted louder and cut themselves with knives and lances, as they usually did, until blood flowed over them. Noon passed and they kept raving until the time of the evening sacrifice. Still there was no voice, no answer and no one paying attention. Then Elijah said to all the people: Come over here. They gathered around him, and he repaired the Lord's altar that had been torn down. Elijah took twelve stones, one for each tribe descended from Jacob, the man to whom the word of the Lord had come: Your name will be Israel. With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord and dug a trench around it large enough to hold two measures of seed. He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said: Fill four jars with water and pour it over the burnt offering and the wood. Do it again, he said. They did it a second time. Do it a third time. They did it a third time. Water ran all around the altar and filled the trench as well. At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet stepped forward and prayed: Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel, that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. Hear me, Lord, hear me, so these people may know that you are the Lord God and that you are turning their hearts back again. Then the fire of the Lord fell. It consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones and the dust, and licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw it, they fell face down and cried: The Lord, he is God! The Lord, he is God! Elijah told them: Seize the prophets of Baal. Don't let a single one escape. They seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and killed them there.
And Elijah came to all the people: How long will you hop between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal, then follow him. And the people didn't answer him a word. And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, who the word of the Lord came to: Israel will be your name. And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord. And he made a trench round the altar, big enough to hold two measures of seed. And he set the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood, and said: Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood. And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded. And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down. And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name: And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood. And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time. And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water. And when noon was past and they prophesied till the time of the evening sacrifice, there was no voice or any who answered or any who paid attention.
And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
Then Elijah said to all the people: Come over here. They gathered around him, and he repaired the Lord's altar that had been torn down.

At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet stepped forward and prayed: Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel, that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.

The rain
Then Elijah said to Ahab: Go up, eat and drink. I can hear the sound of heavy rain coming. Ahab went up to eat and drink, while Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. He told his servant: Go up and look towards the sea. The servant went and looked. Nothing there, he said. Elijah told him: Go back again. Seven times he sent him. The seventh time the servant said: There's a little cloud rising from the sea, about the size of a man's hand. Elijah said: Go and tell Ahab, Get your chariot ready and head down before the rain stops you. Before long the sky turned black with clouds and wind, and a heavy rain came down. Ahab climbed into his chariot and headed for Jezreel. The hand of the Lord came on Elijah. He tucked his robe into his belt and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
And Elijah said to Ahab: Get up, eat and drink. Because there's a sound of plenty of rain. So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel. And he threw himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees. And he said to his servant: Go up now, look towards the sea. And he went up and looked: There's nothing. And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain. So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not. And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel. And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
Then Elijah said to Ahab: Go up, eat and drink. I can hear the sound of heavy rain coming.

Before long the sky turned black with clouds and wind, and a heavy rain came down. Ahab climbed into his chariot and headed for Jezreel.

The hand of the Lord came on Elijah. He tucked his robe into his belt and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
