Elijah runs
Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done, including how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah: May the gods deal with me, ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I haven't made your life like the life of one of them. When Elijah got the message, he ran for his life. He came to Beersheba in Judah and left his servant there. He travelled a day's journey into the wilderness, sat down under a juniper tree and asked to die. Enough, Lord, he said. Take my life. I'm no better than my ancestors. Then he lay down under the juniper tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said: Get up and eat. He looked around and found a cake baked on hot coals and a jar of water beside his head. He ate and drank, then lay down again. The angel of the Lord came back a second time, touched him and said: Get up and eat, because the journey is too much for you. So he got up, ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he travelled forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God.

The Israelites have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars and killed your prophets with the sword. I'm the only one left, and now they're trying to kill me too. The Lord said: Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord. Then the Lord passed by. A great and powerful wind tore into the mountains and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a still small voice. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak, went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. A voice said to him: What are you doing here, Elijah? He answered: I have been very jealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars and killed your prophets with the sword. I'm the only one left, and now they're trying to kill me too. The Lord told him: Go back the way you came, towards the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, anoint Hazael king over Syria. Then anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. Anyone who escapes Hazael's sword will be killed by Jehu, and anyone who escapes Jehu's sword will be killed by Elisha. Yet I have kept seven thousand in Israel for myself — every knee that has not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him.

Because the people of Israel have left your covenant, thrown down your altars and killed your prophets with the sword. And I'm the only one left, and they look for my life to take it away. And the Lord said to him: Go, turn back on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you come, anoint Hazael to be king over Aram. And you'll anoint Jehu son of Nimshi to be king over Israel. And you'll anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place. And it'll be that the one who gets away from the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill. And the one who gets away from the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill. But I've left myself seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that haven't bowed to Baal and every mouth that hasn't kissed him.

The Lord told him: Go back the way you came, towards the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, anoint Hazael king over Syria.
And the Lord said to him: Go, turn back on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you come, anoint Hazael to be king over Aram.
And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
Then anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel-meholah as prophet in your place.
And you'll anoint Jehu son of Nimshi to be king over Israel. And you'll anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place.
And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.
Anyone who escapes Hazael's sword will be killed by Jehu, and anyone who escapes Jehu's sword will be killed by Elisha.
And it'll be that the one who gets away from the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill. And the one who gets away from the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill.
And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.
Yet I have kept seven thousand in Israel for myself — every knee that has not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him.

Elisha called
Elijah left there and found Elisha son of Shaphat ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen. Elisha himself was with the twelfth pair. Elijah walked past and threw his cloak over him. Elisha left the oxen and ran after Elijah. Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, he said, then I'll follow you. Elijah answered: Go back. What have I done to stop you? Elisha went back, took a pair of oxen and slaughtered them. He used the oxen's gear for fuel, cooked the meat and gave it to the people to eat. Then he set out after Elijah and became his servant.
So he went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. And Elijah went past him and threw his cloak on him. And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah: Let me kiss my father and my mother, please, and then I'll follow you. And he said to him: Go back again. Because what have I done to you? And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee? And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
