Then the Lord spoke to Jehu son of Hanani about Baasha: I raised you up from the dust and made you ruler over my people Israel, but you have followed Jeroboam's way and caused my people Israel to sin, provoking me to anger with their sins. So I will sweep away Baasha and his house. I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat. Dogs will eat those belonging to Baasha who die in the city, and the birds of the air will eat those who die in the fields. His son Elah reigned in his place. In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah son of Baasha became king over Israel at Tirzah. He reigned for two years. His servant Zimri, commander of half his chariots, plotted against him. Elah was in Tirzah getting drunk at the house of Arza, the palace steward. Zimri went in, struck Elah down and killed him in the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, then reigned in his place. As soon as Zimri became king and sat on the throne, he struck down Baasha's whole house. He left no male alive, neither relatives nor friends. So Zimri destroyed the whole house of Baasha according to the word the Lord had spoken against Baasha through Jehu the prophet. This was because of all the sins Baasha and his son Elah committed and caused Israel to commit, provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their worthless idols. The troops in camp heard: Zimri has plotted against the king and killed him. So that very day the whole army made Omri, commander of the army, king over Israel in the camp. Omri and all Israel with him marched up from Gibbethon and laid siege to Tirzah. When Zimri saw that the city had been taken, he went into the citadel of the royal palace, set the palace on fire around himself and died. This was because of the sins he committed by doing what was evil in the Lord's sight, following Jeroboam's way and the sin by which Jeroboam caused Israel to sin. He bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for two talents of silver, built a city on it and called the city Samaria after Shemer, the former owner of the hill. Omri did what was evil in the Lord's sight and behaved worse than all who came before him.
