Abijam and Asa
In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijam became king of Judah. He reigned in Jerusalem for three years. His mother was Maachah daughter of Abishalom. He walked in all the sins his father had committed before him. His heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God as David's heart had been. Still, for David's sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem by raising up his son after him and keeping Jerusalem secure. For David had done what was right in the Lord's sight and had not turned aside from anything the Lord commanded him all his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. There had been war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam throughout Rehoboam's life. The rest of Abijam's acts and everything he did are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah. There was also war between Abijam and Jeroboam. Abijam died and was buried in the City of David. His son Asa reigned in his place. In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah. He reigned in Jerusalem for forty-one years. His mother was Maachah daughter of Abishalom. Asa did what was right in the Lord's sight, as his father David had done. He drove the male prostitutes out of the land and removed all the idols his fathers had made. He even removed his mother Maachah from being queen mother because she had made an idol in a grove. Asa destroyed her idol and burned it beside the brook Kidron. The worship shrines were not removed, but Asa's heart was fully devoted to the Lord all his days. He brought into the house of the Lord the things his father had dedicated and the things he himself dedicated: silver, gold and vessels. There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns. Baasha king of Israel attacked Judah and fortified Ramah so no one could go out from or come in to Asa king of Judah. Asa took all the silver and gold left in the treasuries of the house of the Lord and the royal palace and sent it with his servants to Ben-hadad son of Tabrimmon son of Hezion, king of Syria, who lived in Damascus. Asa's message said: There is a treaty between you and me, just as there was between my father and your father. I am sending you a gift of silver and gold. Break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he'll pull back from me. Ben-hadad listened to King Asa and sent his army commanders against the cities of Israel. They struck Ijon, Dan, Abel-beth-maachah, all Cinneroth and the whole land of Naphtali. When Baasha heard about it, he stopped building Ramah and stayed in Tirzah. King Asa then called up everyone in Judah — no one was exempt. They carried away the stones and timber Baasha had been using at Ramah, and Asa used them to build Geba in Benjamin and Mizpah. In his old age, however, he developed a disease in his feet. Asa died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David. His son Jehoshaphat reigned in his place.

And King Asa sent them to Ben-Hadad son of Tabrimmon son of Hezion, king of Aram, who lived at Damascus: There's a covenant between me and you, and between my father and your father. Look — I've sent you a present of silver and gold. Come and break your covenant with Baasha king of Israel, so he'll go away from me. So Ben-Hadad listened to King Asa and sent the captains of his armies against the towns of Israel, and struck Ijon and Dan and Abel Beth Maakah and all Kinneroth, with all the land of Naphtali. And when Baasha heard about it, he stopped building Ramah and lived in Tirzah. Then King Asa called out through all Judah — nobody was let off. Nadab and Baasha
Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel for two years. He did what was evil in the Lord's sight, following his father's ways and the sin by which his father caused Israel to sin. Baasha son of Ahijah, from the house of Issachar, plotted against him. Baasha struck him down at Gibbethon, a Philistine city, while Nadab and all Israel were besieging it. Baasha killed Nadab in the third year of Asa king of Judah and reigned in his place. As soon as Baasha became king, he struck down Jeroboam's entire house. He did not leave alive anyone belonging to Jeroboam, but destroyed them all according to the word the Lord had spoken through his servant Ahijah the Shilonite. This happened because of Jeroboam's sins — the sins he committed and caused Israel to commit, provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger.
