Jeroboam's wife and Ahijah
Around that time Jeroboam's son Abijah became sick. Jeroboam told his wife: Disguise yourself so no one knows you're my wife, then go to Shiloh. Ahijah the prophet is there — the one who told me I would become king over this people. Take ten loaves, some cakes and a jar of honey with you and go to him. He'll tell you what will happen to the child. Jeroboam's wife did as he said and went to Ahijah's house in Shiloh. Ahijah could no longer see; his eyes had failed because of his age. But the Lord told Ahijah: Jeroboam's wife is coming to ask you about her son, because he is sick. This is what you are to tell her. She will come pretending to be someone else. When Ahijah heard her footsteps at the door he said: Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why the disguise? I have grim news for you. Go and tell Jeroboam: This is what the Lord God of Israel says. I raised you up from among the people and made you ruler over my people Israel. I tore the kingdom away from David's house and gave it to you, yet you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commands and followed me with all his heart, doing only what was right in my eyes. You've done worse than everyone before you. You made other gods and cast images for yourself, provoking me to anger, and you have thrown me behind your back. Because of that I will bring disaster on Jeroboam's house. I will cut off every male belonging to Jeroboam in Israel and sweep away his house as completely as a man clears away dung. Dogs will eat those belonging to Jeroboam who die in the city, and the birds of the air will eat those who die in the fields. The Lord has spoken. Now get up and go home. As soon as your feet enter the city, the child will die. All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. He alone from Jeroboam's house will receive a proper burial, because he is the only one in Jeroboam's house in whom the Lord God of Israel has found something good. The Lord will raise up a king over Israel who will cut off Jeroboam's house. The day is coming — indeed, it has already begun. The Lord will strike Israel until it sways like a reed in the water. He will uproot Israel from this good land he gave their fathers and scatter them beyond the river, because they made their pagan worship poles and provoked the Lord to anger. He will give Israel up because of Jeroboam's sins — the sins he committed and caused Israel to commit. Jeroboam's wife left and went to Tirzah. As she crossed the threshold of the house, the child died. They buried him, and all Israel mourned for him, according to the word the Lord had spoken through his servant Ahijah the prophet. Because you've gone and made yourself other gods and cast images, to make me angry, and have thrown me behind your back. So look — I'll bring trouble on the house of Jeroboam and will cut off from Jeroboam every male, both shut up and left in Israel, and will take away what's left of the house of Jeroboam, the way a man takes away dung till it's all gone. The dogs will eat the ones of Jeroboam who die in the town. And the birds of the sky will eat the ones who die in the field. Because the Lord has spoken it. So get up, go to your own house. And when your feet come into the town, the child will die. And all Israel will mourn for him and bury him. Because he only of Jeroboam will come to the grave, because in him something good towards the Lord God of Israel is found in the house of Jeroboam.
