The word against the altar
By the word of the Lord, a man of God came from Judah to Bethel while Jeroboam was standing beside the altar to burn incense. He cried out against the altar by the word of the Lord: Altar, altar! This is what the Lord says. A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the worship shrines who burn incense here, and human bones will be burned on you. That same day he gave a sign: This is the sign the Lord has spoken — the altar will split apart and the ashes on it will be poured out. When King Jeroboam heard the man of God's words against the altar at Bethel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and shouted: Seize him! But the hand he stretched out shrivelled, and he could not draw it back. The altar split apart and its ashes poured out, exactly as the man of God had given for a sign by the word of the Lord. The king said to the man of God: Please plead with the Lord your God and pray for me so my hand can be restored. The man of God pleaded with the Lord, and the king's hand was restored as it had been before. The king told the man of God: Come home with me, have something to eat, and I'll give you a reward. The man of God answered: Even if you gave me half your house, I wouldn't go with you. I will not eat bread or drink water in this place. The word of the Lord commanded me: Do not eat bread or drink water here, and do not return by the way you came. So he left by another road and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel.

And the king answered and said to the man of God: Plead now with the Lord your God and pray for me, so my hand can be given back to me. And the man of God pleaded with the Lord, and the king's hand was given back to him and was like it was before. And the king said to the man of God: Come home with me and get some food, and I'll give you a reward. And the man of God said to the king: If you gave me half your house, I wouldn't go in with you. And I won't eat bread or drink water in this place. Because it was ordered me by the word of the Lord: Don't eat bread or drink water or come back the way you came. So he went another way and didn't come back by the way he came to Bethel.

And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before. And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place: For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest. So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.

So he left by another road and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel.
So he went another way and didn't come back by the way he came to Bethel.
So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.
The old prophet
An old prophet lived in Bethel. His sons came and told him everything the man of God had done there that day, including what he had said to the king. Their father asked: Which way did he go? His sons had seen the road taken by the man of God from Judah. He told his sons: Saddle the donkey for me. They saddled it, and he mounted. He followed the man of God and found him sitting under an oak. He asked: Are you the man of God who came from Judah? I am, he answered. The old prophet said: Come home with me and have some bread. The man of God answered: I can't turn back and go home with you, and I will not eat bread or drink water with you in this place. The word of the Lord told me: Do not eat bread or drink water there, and do not return by the road you came on. The old man said: I'm a prophet too, just like you. An angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord and said, Bring him back to your house so he can eat bread and drink water. But he was lying to him. So the man of God went back with him, ate bread in his house and drank water. While they were sitting at the table, the Lord spoke to the prophet who had brought him back. He cried out to the man of God from Judah: This is what the Lord says. Because you have defied the word of the Lord and have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you, but returned and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you not to eat or drink, your body will not be buried in the grave of your fathers. After the man of God had eaten and drunk, the old prophet saddled the donkey for him. The man of God left, and a lion met him on the road and killed him. His body lay on the road with the donkey standing beside it and the lion standing beside the body. Some men passing by saw the body lying on the road and the lion standing beside it. They went and reported it in the city where the old prophet lived. When the prophet who had brought him back heard the news, he said: It is the man of God who disobeyed the word of the Lord. The Lord gave him over to the lion, which mauled and killed him according to the word the Lord had spoken to him. The old prophet told his sons: Saddle the donkey for me. They saddled it. He went and found the man's body lying on the road, with the donkey and lion still standing beside it. The lion had neither eaten the body nor mauled the donkey. The prophet lifted the man of God's body onto the donkey and brought it back to the city to mourn and bury him. He laid the body in his own grave, and they mourned over him, saying: Oh, my brother. After burying him, the old prophet told his sons: When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried. Lay my bones beside his bones. Because what he proclaimed by the word of the Lord against the altar at Bethel and all the high-place shrines in the cities of Samaria will certainly come to pass.

So the Lord has handed him over to the lion, who's torn him and killed him, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke to him. And he spoke to his sons: Saddle me the donkey. And they saddled it. And he went and found his body thrown in the way, and the donkey and the lion standing by the body. The lion hadn't eaten the body or torn the donkey. And the prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back. And the old prophet came to the town to mourn and to bury him. And he laid his body in his own grave. And they mourned over him: Oh, my brother. And after he'd buried him, he spoke to his sons: When I'm dead, then bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried. Lay my bones beside his bones. Because what he cried out by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places in the towns of Samaria, will definitely come about.

And he said: I can't come back with you or go in with you. And I won't eat bread or drink water with you in this place.
And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:
The word of the Lord told me: Do not eat bread or drink water there, and do not return by the road you came on.
Because it was said to me by the word of the Lord: You won't eat bread or drink water there, or turn back to go the way you came.
For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.
The old man said: I'm a prophet too, just like you. An angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord and said, Bring him back to your house so he can eat bread and drink water. But he was lying to him.
He said to him: I'm a prophet too, the same as you. And an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord: Bring him back with you into your house, so he can eat bread and drink water. But he lied to him.
He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.
So the man of God went back with him, ate bread in his house and drank water.

While they were sitting at the table, the Lord spoke to the prophet who had brought him back.

He cried out to the man of God from Judah: This is what the Lord says. Because you have defied the word of the Lord and have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you,

And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,
but returned and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you not to eat or drink, your body will not be buried in the grave of your fathers.

Jeroboam doesn't turn
Even after this, Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way. He kept appointing priests for the worship shrines from among ordinary people. Anyone who wanted the job could be consecrated as a shrine priest. This became the sin that brought ruin on Jeroboam's house and eventually wiped it from the face of the earth.
After this thing Jeroboam didn't turn from his evil way, but made priests of the high places again out of the lowest of the people. Whoever wanted, he made him holy, and he became one of the priests of the high places. And this thing turned into sin for the house of Jeroboam, to cut it off and to wreck it from off the face of the earth.
