Was it for me you fasted?
And in the fourth year of King Darius, the Lord spoke to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, Chisleu. When they had sent Sherezer and Regemmelech and their men to the house of God to pray before the Lord, and to speak to the priests in the house of the Lord Almighty, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month and keep myself apart, the way I have done all these years? Then the word of the Lord Almighty came to me: Speak to all the people of the land and to the priests and say: When you fasted and mourned in the fifth month and the seventh, these seventy years, was it really for me that you fasted? And when you ate and when you drank, weren't you eating and drinking for yourselves? Aren't these the words the Lord called out through the former prophets, when Jerusalem was settled and doing well, with the towns around her, and when the south country and the lowland were settled?

And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?
Aren't these the words the Lord called out through the former prophets, when Jerusalem was settled and doing well, with the towns around her, and when the south country and the lowland were settled?

And the Lord spoke to Zechariah: This is what the Lord Almighty says: Give true judgement, and show mercy and compassion, every man to his brother. Don't oppress the widow or orphans, the stranger or the poor. And don't any of you plan harm against your brother in your heart. But they refused to listen. They turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears so they wouldn't hear. They made their hearts as hard as an adamant stone, so they would not hear the law or the words the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. So great anger came from the Lord Almighty. And this is what happened: as he called and they would not hear, so they called and I would not hear, says the Lord Almighty. But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations they didn't know. And the land was left desolate behind them, so nobody passed through it or came back. That is how they laid the pleasant land waste.

And don't crush the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor. And don't let any of you think up evil against his brother in your heart. Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts. Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts: But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.
