Elders in every town
I left you in Crete to sort out what was still unfinished, and to appoint elders in every town, the way I told you. Look for a blameless man: the husband of one wife, with faithful children not accused of riot or unruly behaviour. Because a bishop must be blameless, as God's steward — not self-willed, not quick to anger, not given to wine, no striker, and not greedy for dishonest gain. He should be a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy and temperate. He must hold fast to the faithful word as he has been taught, so that by sound teaching he can both encourage and convince those who oppose it.
For this reason I left you in Crete, so you could set in order the things that are lacking and set up elders in every town, the way I'd set out to you. Because there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision. They need shutting up. They're turning whole households over, teaching what they've no business teaching, and doing it for the money. One of their own — a prophet of theirs — said: The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons. This witness is true. So rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith, instead of paying any attention to Jewish fables and the rules of men who have turned their backs on the truth. To the pure, all things are pure. But to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure — even their mind and conscience are defiled. They profess that they know God, but in their works they deny him. They are disgusting, disobedient, and unfit when it comes to every good work.
