Naomi loses everything
In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. A man of Bethlehemjudah went to stay for a while in the country of Moab, with his wife and his two sons. The man's name was Elimelech, his wife's name Naomi, and his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. They came into the country of Moab and stayed there. Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. They married Moabite women — one named Orpah, the other Ruth — and they lived there about ten years. And then Mahlon and Chilion both died as well, and the woman was left without her two sons and without her husband. Then she got up with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab, because she had heard there that the Lord had come to the aid of his people by giving them bread. So she left the place where she had been living, with her two daughters-in-law, and they set out on the road back to the land of Judah. Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, Go on, both of you — back to your mother's house. May the Lord be as good to you as you have been to the dead and to me. May the Lord grant that each of you finds rest in the house of a husband. Then she kissed them, and they cried out loud. And they said to her, No. We will go back with you, to your people. But Naomi said, Turn back, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Have I got any more sons in my womb who could become your husbands? Turn back, my daughters. Go on. I am too old to have a husband. And even if I said there was hope for me — even if I had a husband tonight and bore sons — Would you wait for them until they grew up? Would you keep yourselves from marrying for their sake? No, my daughters. It grieves me deeply for your sakes that the Lord's hand has gone out against me.

And Naomi said: Turn back, my daughters. Why would you go with me? Have I got any more sons in my womb who could be your husbands? Turn back, my daughters, go. Because I'm too old to have a husband. If I said I had hope, if I had a husband tonight and had sons too — would you wait for them till they'd grown? Would you stay unmarried for them? No, my daughters. Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, Go on, both of you — back to your mother's house. May the Lord be as good to you as you have been to the dead and to me.

Go back after her. And Ruth said, Do not ask me to leave you, or to turn back from following you. Where you go, I will go. Where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me ever so severely if anything but death parts you and me. When Naomi saw she had her mind made up to go with her, she stopped arguing with her. So the two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem. And when they got there, the whole town was stirred up over them, and they said, Is this Naomi? And she said to them, Don't call me Naomi. Call me Mara, because the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the Lord has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi, when the Lord has testified against me and the Almighty has brought this trouble on me? So Naomi returned, with Ruth the Moabite, her daughter-in-law, who came with her out of the country of Moab. They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.

And when they'd come to Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred up about them. And they said: Is this Naomi? And she said to them: Don't call me Naomi. Call me Mara, because the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the Lord has brought me home empty. Why call me Naomi, seeing the Lord has testified against me and the Almighty has troubled me? So Naomi came back, and Ruth the Moabite her daughter-in-law with her, who came back out of the country of Moab. And they came to Bethlehem at the start of the barley harvest.

I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me? So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
