Thanksgiving and prayer
Paul and Timotheus, servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God every time I think of you, always, in every prayer of mine for the lot of you, praying with joy, because of the part you have taken in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am confident of this: the one who started a good work in you will see it through to the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because I have got you in my heart. Whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, you are all in this grace with me. God is my witness how much I miss the lot of you, with the deep affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love grows more and more, in knowledge and in every kind of good sense, so you can pick what really matters, and be sincere and without fault until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has actually helped the gospel along. so that my chains in Christ have become known throughout the whole palace, and everywhere else. And most of the brothers in the Lord have taken heart from my chains, and they are much bolder about speaking the word without fear. Some do preach Christ out of envy and a will to make trouble, and some out of goodwill. One lot preach Christ out of arguing, not sincerely, thinking to add trouble to my chains. But the others do it out of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. What of it? Either way, whether the motive is put on or genuine, Christ is preached. And I am glad of that, and I will go on being glad. Because I know this will turn out for my salvation, through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, just as I earnestly expect and hope that I will have nothing to be ashamed of, but that with all boldness, now as always, Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.

So my chains in Christ are plain in all the palace and in all other places. And plenty of the brothers in the Lord, growing confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:
One lot preach Christ out of arguing, not sincerely, thinking to add trouble to my chains.

But the others do it out of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.

What of it? Either way, whether the motive is put on or genuine, Christ is preached. And I am glad of that, and I will go on being glad.

To live is Christ
Because for me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I go on living in the body, that means fruitful work for me. So which to choose? I honestly don't know. I am caught between the two. I would like to go and be with Christ, which is far better by a long way. But staying on in the body is more use to you. And being sure of that, I know I will stay, and go on with the lot of you for your progress and joy in the faith, so that your rejoicing in Jesus Christ on my account may be even greater when I come to you again. Only make sure the way you live matches the gospel of Christ. Then whether I come and see you or only hear about you from a distance, I will know you are standing firm in one spirit, working together side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not scared off by your opponents in anything. That is a clear sign to them of their ruin, and of your salvation — and that from God. Because it has been granted to you, on Christ's behalf, not only to believe in him but to suffer for him as well, going through the same struggle you saw me have, and now hear I am still having.
Because for me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour. Yet what I'll choose I don't know. Because I'm in a strait between the two, having a longing to go and to be with Christ, which is far better. But to stay in the flesh is more needful for you. And having this confidence, I know I'll stay and go on with you all, for your moving on and joy of faith. So your celebrating can be more plentiful in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again. Only let your way of life be as it becomes the good news of Christ — so whether I come and see you or else am away, I can hear of you that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind working together for the faith of the good news. And in nothing frightened by the ones against you, which is to them a plain sign of ruin, but to you of salvation, and that of God. Because to you it's given on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him but to suffer for his sake too. Having the same fight you saw in me and now hear is in me.

For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith; That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again. Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.
And being sure of that, I know I will stay, and go on with the lot of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
And having this confidence, I know I'll stay and go on with you all, for your moving on and joy of faith.

so that your rejoicing in Jesus Christ on my account may be even greater when I come to you again.
So your celebrating can be more plentiful in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.
