Laughed to scorn
But when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was furious and took great offence, and he sneered at the Jews. And he said in front of his brothers and the army of Samaria, What do these feeble Jews think they are doing? Are they going to fortify themselves? Are they going to sacrifice? Are they going to finish in a day? Are they going to bring stones back to life out of heaps of rubbish, burnt as they are? And Tobiah the Ammonite was standing beside him, and he said, Whatever they build, if a fox went up on it he'd knock their stone wall down. Hear us, our God, because we are treated with contempt. Turn their insults back on their own heads, and hand them over as plunder in a land of captivity. Don't cover over their guilt, and don't let their sin be blotted out from before you — because they have provoked you to anger in front of the builders. So we built the wall, and the whole wall was joined together to half its height. Because the people had a mind to work. But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabians and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were going up and the gaps were beginning to close, they were furious. And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to throw us into confusion. So we prayed to our God, and set a watch against them day and night.
But when Sanballat heard we were building the wall, he was angry and very put out, and laughed at the Jews. And he spoke in front of his brothers and the army of Samaria: What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they make themselves strong? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they bring the stones back to life out of the heaps of rubbish, seeing they're burnt? Now Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said: Whatever they build, if a fox goes up, he'll break down their stone wall. Listen, our God, because we're looked down on. And turn their insult back on their own head, and give them as plunder in a land of captivity. And don't cover over what they've done wrong, and don't let their sin be wiped out from in front of you. Because they've made you angry in front of the builders. So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height. Because the people had a mind to work. But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were going up and that the breaks were starting to be filled, then they were very angry. And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to make trouble in it. But we prayed to our God and set a watch against them day and night because of them.
But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews. And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned? Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall. Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity: And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders. So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work. But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth, And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it. Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

Sword in one hand
And the men of Judah said, The men carrying the loads are worn out, and there is so much rubble that we can't get the wall built. And our enemies said, They won't know a thing, and they won't see us, until we are right in among them and killing them, and the work stops. And when the Jews living near them came, they told us ten times over, Wherever you turn, they will be on you. So I stationed people in the lowest parts behind the wall, and on the higher ground. I set them by families, with their swords, their spears and their bows. And I looked, and got up, and said to the nobles and the officials and the rest of the people: Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes. And when our enemies heard that we knew about it, and that God had brought their plan to nothing, we all went back to the wall, every man to his own work. And from that day on, half my men did the work while the other half held the spears and the shields and the bows and the armour. And the officers stood behind the whole people of Judah. Those building the wall and those carrying the loads did the work with one hand and held a weapon with the other. And every one of the builders had his sword strapped to his side as he built. And the man who sounded the trumpet stayed beside me. And I said to the nobles and the officials and the rest of the people: The work is big and spread out, and we are separated along the wall, a long way from one another. So wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, come to us there. Our God will fight for us. So we kept at the work, with half of them holding spears from first light until the stars came out. And at the same time I said to the people, Let every man and his servant stay the night inside Jerusalem, so they can be a guard for us at night and work by day. So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the guards who followed me took off our clothes, except when each man took them off for washing.
And Judah said: The strength of the ones who carry loads is failing, and there's plenty of rubbish. So we can't build the wall. And the ones against us said: They won't know or see till we come into the middle of them and kill them, and make the work stop. And when the Jews who lived by them came, they said to us ten times: Wherever you turn, they'll be on us. So I set men in the lowest places behind the wall and on the higher places. I even set the people by their families with their swords, their spears and their bows. And I looked and got up and said to the nobles and to the rulers and to the rest of the people: Don't be frightened of them. Remember the Lord, who's great and terrifying, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your houses. And when the ones against us heard that it was known to us and God had brought their plan to nothing, we all came back to the wall, every one to his work. And from that day on, half my servants worked at the work, and the other half of them held the spears, the shields and the bows and the coats of mail. And the rulers were behind all the house of Judah. The ones who built the wall and the ones who carried loads, with the ones who loaded, each worked with one hand at the work and with the other hand held a weapon. Because every one of the builders had his sword strapped by his side, and that's how he built. And the one who blew the trumpet was beside me. And I said to the nobles and to the rulers and to the rest of the people: The work is big and spread out, and we're separated on the wall, one a long way from another. Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, gather to us there. Our God will fight for us. So we worked at the work. And half of them held the spears from the break of day till the stars came out. And at the same time I said to the people: Let every one with his servant stay the night inside Jerusalem, so they can be a guard to us by night and work by day. So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the men of the guard who followed me took off our clothes, except that every one took them off for washing.
And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall. And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease. And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you. Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows. And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the LORD, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses. And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work. And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah. They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon. For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me. And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another. In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us. So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared. Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day. So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.
