Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he was hungry. And when the tempter came to him he said, If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. But he answered, It is written: Man won't live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God. Then the devil took him into the holy city and set him on the highest point of the temple, and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. Because it is written: He will give his angels charge over you, and in their hands they will hold you up, so you won't strike your foot against a stone. Jesus said to him, It is written again: You won't put the Lord your God to the test. Again the devil took him up to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them, and said to him, All these things I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me. Then Jesus said to him, Get away from me, Satan. Because it is written: You'll worship the Lord your God, and him only will you serve. Then the devil left him. And angels came and waited on him.

Preaching in Galilee

And leaving Nazareth, he came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, on the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim, so that what was spoken by Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled: The land of Zabulon and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who sat in darkness saw a great light. And on those who sat in the region and shadow of death, light has dawned. From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, Repent, because the kingdom of heaven is close.

And his fame went through all Syria. And they brought him all who were sick with various diseases and torments, and those possessed by demons, and those who had seizures, and those who were paralysed. And he healed them. And great crowds followed him from Galilee, and from the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond the Jordan.
