John the Baptist
In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, and saying, Repent, because the kingdom of heaven is close. Because this is the one spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying: The voice of one calling in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. And this John had clothing of camel's hair with a leather belt round his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem went out to him, and all Judaea, and all the region around the Jordan, and they were baptised by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, You brood of vipers, who warned you to run from the anger to come? So bring forth fruits fitting for repentance. And don't think to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our father. Because I tell you, God is able to raise up children to Abraham out of these stones. And already the axe is laid to the root of the trees. So every tree that doesn't bring forth good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. I baptise you with water to repentance. But the one coming after me is mightier than I am, and I am not worthy to carry his shoes. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn. But he will burn up the chaff with fire that never goes out.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptised by him. But John tried to stop him, saying, I need to be baptised by you, and are you coming to me? And Jesus answered him, Let it be so for now. Because this is how it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he let him. And when Jesus was baptised, he came up straight away out of the water. And the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and settling on him. And a voice came from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
