The change on the mountain
And after six days Jesus took Peter, James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain on their own. And he was transfigured in front of them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes were as white as the light. And Moses and Elias appeared to them, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, let us make three shelters here — one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elias.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him. And when the disciples heard it they fell face down and were terribly afraid. And Jesus came and touched them and said, Get up. Don't be afraid. And when they looked up they saw nobody except Jesus alone. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus ordered them, saying, Tell nobody about the vision until the Son of man has risen again from the dead. And his disciples asked him, Why then do the scribes say Elias must come first? And Jesus answered them, Elias truly does come first, and restores everything. But I tell you that Elias has come already, and they didn't recognise him, and did to him whatever they liked. In the same way the Son of man is going to suffer at their hands. Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.

Then Jesus answered, You faithless and twisted generation. How long will I be with you? How long will I put up with you? Bring him here to me. And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him. And the child was cured from that very hour. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, Why couldn't we drive it out? And Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief. Because I tell you the truth, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move. And nothing will be impossible for you. But this kind doesn't go out except by prayer and fasting.

And they were very grieved. And when they had come to Capernaum, those who received tribute money came to Peter and said, Doesn't your master pay tribute? He said, Yes. And when he had come into the house, Jesus spoke first, saying, What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or tax — from their own children, or from others? Peter said to him, From others. Jesus said to him, Then the children are free. Even so, so we don't offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. And when you have opened its mouth you will find a coin. Take that and give it to them for me and for you.
