The boy with the spirit
And when he came to the disciples he saw a big crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. And straight away the whole crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and ran up to greet him. And he asked the scribes, What are you arguing with them about? And one of the crowd answered, Master, I have brought you my son. He has a spirit that makes him mute. And wherever it takes hold of him it throws him down. And he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and goes rigid. And I asked your disciples to drive it out, and they couldn't. And he answered them, You unbelieving generation. How long am I to be with you? How long am I to put up with you? Bring him to me. And they brought him to him. And when the spirit saw Jesus, straight away it threw the boy into convulsions, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And he asked his father, How long has this been happening to him? And he said, Since he was a child. And it has often thrown him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us. Jesus said to him, If you can believe — everything is possible to the one who believes. And straight away the boy's father cried out and said with tears, Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief. And when Jesus saw that the crowd was running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and never go into him again. And the spirit cried out and threw him into terrible convulsions and came out of him. And the boy was like a corpse, so that many said, He is dead. But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he stood up. And when he had gone into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why couldn't we drive it out? And he said to them, This kind can't be driven out by anything except prayer and fasting.

And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. But they didn't understand what he said, and they were afraid to ask him. And he came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, What were you arguing about on the road? But they said nothing, because on the road they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest. And he sat down and called the twelve and said to them, If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all. And he took a child and set him among them. And taking him in his arms he said to them, Whoever welcomes one of these children in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me doesn't welcome me but the one who sent me. And John said to him, Master, we saw a man driving out demons in your name, and he doesn't follow us. And we told him to stop, because he doesn't follow us. But Jesus said, Don't stop him. Because nobody who does a miracle in my name can soon afterwards speak evil of me. Because whoever isn't against us is for us. And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you belong to Christ — I tell you the truth, he won't lose his reward. And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung round his neck and be thrown into the sea. And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to go into life maimed than to have two hands and go into hell, into the fire that never goes out, where their worm doesn't die and the fire isn't put out. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to go into life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell, into the fire that never goes out, where their worm doesn't die and the fire isn't put out. And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to go into the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell fire, where their worm doesn't die and the fire isn't put out. Because everyone will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be salted with salt. Salt is good. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.

And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea. And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
