The sower
And he began to teach beside the sea again. And such a great crowd gathered round him that he got into a boat and sat in it on the water, while the whole crowd was on the shore at the water's edge. And he taught them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: Listen. A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. And some fell on rocky ground where it hadn't much soil, and straight away it sprang up, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it gave no crop. And other seed fell on good ground and gave a crop that came up and grew, and produced thirty times, and sixty, and a hundred. And he said to them, Anyone who has ears to hear, let him hear. And when he was alone, those round him with the twelve asked him about the parables. And he said to them, To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God. But to those outside, everything comes in parables, so that seeing they may see and not perceive, and hearing they may hear and not understand, in case they should turn and be forgiven. And he said to them, Don't you understand this parable? Then how will you understand any of the parables? The sower sows the word. And these are the ones along the path where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes straight away and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. And these are the ones sown on rocky ground. When they hear the word, they receive it straight away with gladness. But they have no root in themselves and last only a short time. Then when trouble or persecution comes because of the word, straight away they fall away. And these are the ones sown among thorns — the ones who hear the word, but the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches and the craving for other things come in and choke the word, and it produces nothing. And these are the ones sown on good ground — those who hear the word and take it in, and bear fruit, thirty times, and sixty, and a hundred.

And he said to them, Is a lamp brought in to be put under a bushel, or under a bed, and not on a stand? Because there is nothing hidden that won't be brought out into the open, and nothing kept secret that won't come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear. And he said to them, Take care what you hear. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you — and more will be given to you who hear. Because to the one who has, more will be given. And from the one who hasn't, even what he has will be taken away. And he said, This is what the kingdom of God is like: a man scatters seed on the ground, and sleeps and gets up, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, and he doesn't know how. The earth produces a crop by itself: first the blade, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the crop is ready, straight away he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come. And he said, What should we compare the kingdom of God to? Or what parable should we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which when it is sown in the ground is the smallest of all the seeds on earth. But once it is sown it grows up and becomes bigger than any garden plant, and puts out great branches, so the birds of the air can nest in its shade. And with many parables like these he spoke the word to them, as much as they were able to hear. And he didn't speak to them without a parable. But privately, with his own disciples, he explained everything.

And that same day, when evening came, he said to them, Let us go over to the other side. And when they had sent the crowd away, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And there were other boats with him. And a great windstorm came up, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. And he was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. And they woke him and said to him, Master, don't you care that we are going under? And he got up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Quiet. Be still. And the wind dropped, and there was a great calm. And he said to them, Why are you so frightened? How is it you have no faith? And they were terrified, and said to one another, Who is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him.
And the same day, when the evening had come, he said to them: Let's go over to the other side. And when they'd sent the crowd away, they took him as he was in the boat. And there were other little boats with him too. And a great storm of wind came up, and the waves beat into the boat, so it was now full. And he was in the back of the boat asleep on a cushion. And they woke him and said to him: Boss, don't you care that we're going down? And he got up and told the wind off, and said to the sea: Peace, be still. And the wind dropped, and there was a great calm. And he said to them: Why are you so frightened? How is it you've got no faith? And they were very afraid and said to each other: What kind of man is this, that even the wind and the sea do what he says?

And they were terrified, and said to one another, Who is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him.
And they were very afraid and said to each other: What kind of man is this, that even the wind and the sea do what he says?
And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
