The anointing at Bethany
Now it was two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to take him by stealth and put him to death. But they said, Not during the feast, or there may be an uproar among the people. And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the person with leprosy, sitting at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of ointment of spikenard, very costly. And she broke the jar and poured it on his head. And some there were indignant among themselves and said, Why has this ointment been wasted? It could have been sold for more than three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor. And they scolded her. And Jesus said, Leave her alone. Why are you troubling her? She has done a good work for me. Because you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want you can do good for them. But you won't always have me. She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint my body for burial. I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will be told as well, in memory of her. And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray him to them. And when they heard it they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he looked for a good opportunity to betray him.

And they began to be grieved, and to say to him one by one, Is it I? And another said, Is it I? And he answered them, It is one of the twelve, one who dips with me in the dish. The Son of man goes as it is written of him. But trouble is coming to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed. It would have been better for that man if he had never been born. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it and broke it, and gave it to them and said, Take, eat. This is my body. And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And he said to them, This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many. I tell you the truth, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

And Jesus said to him, I tell you the truth, today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times. But he said all the more strongly, If I have to die with you, I will never deny you. And they all said the same. And they came to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, Sit here while I pray. And he took Peter and James and John with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. And he said to them, My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow, to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch. And he went a little further and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want. And he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, Simon, are you asleep? Couldn't you keep watch one hour? Keep watch and pray, so you don't come into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. And he went away again and prayed, saying the same words. And when he came back he found them asleep again, because their eyes were heavy. And they didn't know what to say to him. And he came the third time and said to them, Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough. The hour has come. Look — the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up. Let us go. Look — the one who betrays me is here.

And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him. And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

The arrest
And straight away, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a large crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. Now the one who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, The one I kiss is the man. Take him and lead him away under guard. And as soon as he came, he went straight away to him and said, Master, Master. And he kissed him. And they laid hands on him and took him. And one of those standing by drew a sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. And Jesus said to them, Have you come out with swords and clubs to take me, as though I were a robber? I was with you every day in the temple teaching, and you didn't take me. But the scriptures must be fulfilled. And they all left him and ran. And a young man was following him, with nothing on but a linen cloth. And they seized him, and he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.
And straight away, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. And the one who handed him over had given them a sign: Whoever I kiss, that's him. Take him and lead him away safely. And as soon as he'd come, he goes straight away to him and says: Teacher, teacher — and kissed him. And they laid their hands on him and took him. And one of the ones standing by drew a sword and struck a servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. And Jesus answered them: Have you come out as against a thief, with swords and with staves, to take me? I was with you every day in the temple teaching, and you didn't take me. But the scriptures have to be carried out. And they all left him and ran. And a certain young man followed him, with a linen cloth thrown about his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him. And he left the linen cloth and ran from them naked.
And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely. And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him. And they laid their hands on him, and took him. And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me? I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled. And they all forsook him, and fled. And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him: And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

And you will see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, What further need have we of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think? And they all condemned him as deserving death. And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face and strike him, and to say to him, Prophesy. And the officers struck him with their hands. And while Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came. And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, You were with Jesus of Nazareth too. But he denied it, saying, I don't know or understand what you are talking about. And he went out into the porch, and the rooster crowed. And the servant girl saw him again and began to say to those standing there, This is one of them. And he denied it again. And a little later those standing there said to Peter again, You certainly are one of them, because you are a Galilaean, and your accent gives you away. But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I don't know this man you are talking about. And the rooster crowed the second time. And Peter remembered the word Jesus had said to him: Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times. And when he thought about it, he wept.
