The Lord was like an enemy

How the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion with the cloud of his anger. He has thrown down the splendour of Israel from heaven to earth, and did not remember his footstool in the day of his anger. The Lord has swallowed up all the dwellings of Jacob without pity. In his fury he has thrown down the strongholds of the daughter of Judah. He has brought them to the ground. He has brought the kingdom and its princes into disgrace. In his fierce anger he has cut off every horn of Israel. He has drawn back his right hand in the face of the enemy. He has burned against Jacob like a flaming fire that eats up everything around it. He has bent his bow like an enemy. His right hand is ready to strike us. He has killed everything that was pleasant to the eye. In the tent of the daughter of Zion he has poured out his fury like fire. The Lord has become like an enemy. He has swallowed up Israel. He has swallowed up all her palaces and destroyed her strongholds, and he has multiplied mourning and grief for the daughter of Judah. He has torn down his shelter as easily as a garden hut. He has destroyed his place of assembly. The Lord has caused the appointed feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and in his fierce anger has despised king and priest. The Lord has cast off his altar and turned away from his sanctuary. He has handed the walls of her palaces over to the enemy. They raised a shout in the house of the Lord as on the day of a feast. The Lord determined to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion. He stretched out the measuring line and did not hold his hand back from destroying. He made the rampart and the wall mourn; together they wasted away. Her gates have sunk into the ground. He has destroyed and broken her bars. Her king and her princes are among the Gentiles. The law is no more, and her prophets find no vision from the Lord. The elders of the daughter of Zion sit on the ground in silence. They have thrown dust on their heads and put on coarse mourning cloth. The young women of Jerusalem hang their heads to the ground. My eyes are worn out with tears. Everything inside me is churning. My heart is poured out on the ground because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because children and infants faint in the streets of the city. They say to their mothers, Where is the bread and wine? — as they faint like wounded men in the streets of the city, as their life drains away in their mothers' arms.

How the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger. He's thrown down the beauty of Israel from heaven to earth, and he hasn't remembered his footstool on the day of his anger. The Lord has swallowed up all the homes of Jacob and hasn't pitied them. He's pulled down the strongholds of the daughter of Judah in his fury. He's brought them to the ground. He's made the kingdom and its officials common. He's cut off every horn of Israel in the heat of his anger. He's pulled his right hand back in front of the enemy. And he's burnt against Jacob like a flaming fire that eats everything round it. He's bent his bow like an enemy. He's stood with his right hand like the one against us and killed everything that was good to look at in the tent of the daughter of Zion. He's poured out his fury like fire. The Lord was like an enemy. He's swallowed up Israel. He's swallowed up all her palaces. He's wrecked his strongholds. And he's made mourning and grieving grow for the daughter of Judah. And he's pulled down his shelter like a garden hut. He's wrecked the place of his gathering. The Lord has made the set feasts and the sabbaths be forgotten in Zion, and in his angry fury he's sneered at the king and the priest. The Lord has thrown off his altar. He's loathed his holy place. He's handed the walls of her palaces over into the hand of the enemy. They've made a noise in the house of the Lord like on the day of a set feast. The Lord decided to pull down the wall of the daughter of Zion. He stretched out the line. He didn't pull his hand back from wrecking. So he made the rampart and the wall mourn. They drooped together. Her gates have sunk into the ground. He's wrecked and broken her bars. Her king and her officials are among the nations. There's no teaching. Her prophets don't find a vision from the Lord either. The elders of the daughter of Zion sit on the ground and say nothing. They've thrown dust on their heads. They've strapped on sackcloth. The young women of Jerusalem hang their heads to the ground. My eyes fail with tears. My insides are churning. My liver is poured out on the ground for the ruin of the daughter of my people, because the children and the babies faint in the streets of the town. They say to their mothers: Where's grain and wine? — while they faint like the wounded in the streets of the town, while their soul is poured out into their mothers' arms.

How hath the LORD covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, and cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel, and remembered not his footstool in the day of his anger! The LORD hath swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not pitied: he hath thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah; he hath brought them down to the ground: he hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof. He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devoureth round about. He hath bent his bow like an enemy: he stood with his right hand as an adversary, and slew all that were pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion: he poured out his fury like fire. The LORD was as an enemy: he hath swallowed up Israel, he hath swallowed up all her palaces: he hath destroyed his strong holds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation. And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden: he hath destroyed his places of the assembly: the LORD hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest. The LORD hath cast off his altar, he hath abhorred his sanctuary, he hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the LORD, as in the day of a solemn feast. The LORD hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion: he hath stretched out a line, he hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying: therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament; they languished together. Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD. The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground. Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city. They say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers’ bosom.

Pour out your heart like water

What can I say for you? What can I compare you to, daughter of Jerusalem? What can I set beside you to comfort you, virgin daughter of Zion? Your wound is as wide as the sea. Who can heal you? Your prophets have seen vain and foolish things for you. They have not uncovered your wrongdoing to turn away your captivity, but have seen false burdens and causes of banishment for you. All who pass by clap their hands at you. They hiss and shake their heads at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city people called The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth? All your enemies have opened their mouths against you. They hiss and grind their teeth and say, We have swallowed her up. This is the day we were waiting for. We have lived to see it. The Lord has done what he planned. He has carried out his word, which he commanded long ago. He has thrown down without pity. He has let the enemy gloat over you and raised up the horn of your adversaries. Their heart cried out to the Lord. Wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night. Give yourself no rest. Let your eyes have no relief. Get up and cry out in the night, at the start of the watches. Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord. Lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint from hunger at the head of every street. Look, Lord, and consider who you have done this to. Should women eat their own children, the little ones they have cared for? Should priest and prophet be killed in the sanctuary of the Lord? Young and old lie together on the ground in the streets. My young women and my young men have fallen by the sword. You killed them in the day of your anger. You slaughtered them without pity. You called my terrors in from every side, as if to a feast day. In the day of the Lord's anger nobody escaped and nobody was left. The ones I cared for and brought up, my enemy has destroyed.

What can I take up for you? What can I compare you to, daughter of Jerusalem? What can I match you with, so I can comfort you, virgin daughter of Zion? Because your break is as big as the sea. Who can heal you? Your prophets have seen empty and stupid things for you. And they haven't uncovered your wrongdoing, to turn back what's been taken from you. But they've seen for you empty words and reasons for being thrown out. Everyone who goes past claps their hands at you. They hiss and shake their head at the daughter of Jerusalem: Is this the town men called the finish of beauty, the joy of the whole earth? All the ones against you have opened their mouth wide at you. They hiss and gnash their teeth. They say: We've swallowed her up. This is the day we waited for, no question. We've found it. We've seen it. The Lord has done what he planned. He's carried out what he said, that he ordered in the days of old. He's pulled down and hasn't pitied. And he's made the enemy celebrate over you. He's lifted up the horn of the ones against you. Their heart cried out to the Lord. Wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night. Don't give yourself any rest. Don't let the pupil of your eye stop. Get up and cry out in the night. At the start of the watches, pour out your heart like water in front of the face of the Lord. Lift up your hands to him for the life of your children, who faint with hunger at the head of every street. Look, Lord, and think about who you've done this to. Should the women eat their own fruit, the children they've carried? Should the priest and the prophet be killed in the holy place of the Lord? The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets. My young women and my young men have fallen by the sword. You've killed them on the day of your anger. You've slaughtered and haven't pitied. You've called my terrors from every side, like on the day of a set feast, so nobody got away or was left on the day of the Lord's anger. The ones I've carried and brought up, the enemy has finished them off.

What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee? Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment. All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth? All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it. The LORD hath done that which he had devised; he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he hath thrown down, and hath not pitied: and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee, he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries. Their heart cried unto the LORD, O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease. Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the LORD: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street. Behold, O LORD, and consider to whom thou hast done this. Shall the women eat their fruit, and children of a span long? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord? The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast killed, and not pitied. Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the day of the LORD’s anger none escaped nor remained: those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed.
