She sits on her own

How lonely the city sits, that was once full of people. She has become like a widow — she who was great among the nations, a princess among the provinces, is put to forced labour. She weeps bitterly in the night, and the tears are on her cheeks. Among all her lovers she has nobody to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed her; they have become her enemies. Judah has gone into exile, out of suffering and hard service. She lives among the nations and finds no rest. All her pursuers overtook her in her distress. The roads to Zion mourn, because nobody comes to the appointed feasts. All her gates lie desolate. Her priests groan, her young women are grieving, and she herself is in bitterness. Her adversaries have become the masters; her enemies do well. Because the Lord has afflicted her for the number of her rebellions, her children have gone into captivity ahead of the enemy. All the beauty has gone from the daughter of Zion. Her princes have become like deer that find no pasture, and they run without strength before the pursuer. Jerusalem remembered in the days of her suffering and misery all the pleasant things she had in days of old. When her people fell into the enemy's hand and nobody helped her, the adversaries saw her and mocked at her sabbaths. Jerusalem has badly sinned; so she is removed. All who honoured her despise her because they have seen her nakedness. She sighs and turns backward. Her impurity was in her skirts. She gave no thought to what would come of it, and her fall was astonishing, with nobody to comfort her. Look, Lord, on my suffering, because the enemy has triumphed. The enemy has laid his hand on all her precious things. She has seen the nations enter her sanctuary — those you had commanded should not come into your assembly. All her people groan as they search for bread. They have traded their precious things for food, just to stay alive. Look, Lord, and consider, because I have become worthless.

How the town sits on her own, that was full of people. She's turned into a widow, that was great among the nations. She was a princess among the provinces, and now she's under forced labour. She weeps hard in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks. Out of all the ones who loved her, she's got nobody to comfort her. All her mates have dealt treacherously with her. They've turned into her enemies. Judah has gone into exile because of trouble and hard service. She lives among the nations and finds no rest. All the ones chasing her caught her in her narrow places. The roads to Zion mourn, because nobody comes to the set feasts. All her gates are empty. Her priests groan. Her young women are grieving, and she's in bitterness. The ones against her have come out on top. The ones who hate her do well. Because the Lord has troubled her for the size of her rebellions. Her children have gone into captivity in front of the enemy. And all her beauty has gone from the daughter of Zion. Her officials have turned into deer that find no pasture, and they've gone off with no strength in front of the one chasing them. In the days of her trouble and her wandering, Jerusalem remembered all the good things she had in the days of old — when her people fell into the hand of the enemy and nobody helped her. The ones against her saw her and laughed at her ruin. Jerusalem has sinned badly. That's why she's been shifted. Everyone who honoured her looks down on her now, because they've seen her nakedness. Yes, she groans and turns away. Her filth is on her skirts. She didn't think about how it would end. So she came down in a shocking way, and she's got nobody to comfort her. Look at my trouble, Lord, because the enemy has made himself big. The one against her has spread out his hand over everything she treasured. Because she's seen the nations go into her holy place — the ones you ordered not to come into your gathering. All her people groan and look for bread. They've given what they treasured for food to keep their soul alive. Look, Lord, and think about it, because I've turned into nothing.

How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people! how is she become as a widow! she that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary! She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies. Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits. The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness. Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper; for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy. And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed: her princes are become like harts that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer. Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her: the adversaries saw her, and did mock at her sabbaths. Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward. Her filthiness is in her skirts; she remembereth not her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter. O LORD, behold my affliction: for the enemy hath magnified himself. The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things: for she hath seen that the heathen entered into her sanctuary, whom thou didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation. All her people sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to relieve the soul: see, O LORD, and consider; for I am become vile.

Is it nothing to you?

Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look and see whether there is any sorrow like the sorrow done to me, which the Lord brought on me in the day of his fierce anger. From on high he sent fire into my bones, and it has overcome them. He spread a net for my feet and turned me back. He has left me desolate, faint all day long. The yoke of my rebellions is bound by his hand. They are woven together and they come up on my neck. He has made my strength fail. The Lord has handed me over to those I cannot stand against. The Lord has trampled all my strong men within me. He called an assembly against me to crush my young men. The Lord has trampled the virgin daughter of Judah like grapes in a winepress. This is why I weep. My eyes, my eyes run with water, because the comforter who should revive me is far away. My children are desolate, because the enemy has won. Zion spreads out her hands, but there is nobody to comfort her. The Lord has commanded about Jacob that his adversaries should surround him. Jerusalem is like a menstruous woman among them. The Lord is righteous, because I rebelled against his word. Listen, all you peoples, and look at my sorrow. My young women and my young men have gone into captivity. I called for my lovers, but they let me down. My priests and my elders died in the city while they were searching for food to keep themselves alive. Look, Lord, at my distress. Everything inside me is churning. My heart is turned over within me, because I have rebelled bitterly. Outside the sword takes the children; inside the house there is death. People have heard me groaning, and there is nobody to comfort me. All my enemies have heard of my trouble and are glad you have done it. Bring on the day you have announced, and let them become like me. Let all their wickedness come before you, and deal with them as you have dealt with me for all my rebellions. Because my groans are many and my heart is faint.

Is it nothing to you, all you who go past? Look and see if there's any sorrow like my sorrow that's been done to me — that the Lord has troubled me with on the day of the heat of his anger. He's sent fire from on high into my bones, and it's beaten them. He's spread a net for my feet. He's turned me back. He's made me a wreck, faint all day long. The yoke of my rebellions is tied by his hand. They're wound together and come up on my neck. He's made my strength fall. The Lord has handed me over into their hands, and I can't get up. The Lord has trodden down all my strong men in the middle of me. He's called a set time against me to crush my young men. The Lord has trodden the virgin daughter of Judah like grapes in a winepress. I weep over these things. My eye, my eye runs down with water, because the comforter who'd bring my soul back is a long way off from me. My children are a wreck, because the enemy has won. Zion spreads out her hands, and there's nobody to comfort her. The Lord has ordered it about Jacob, that the ones round him would be against him. Jerusalem is like an unclean thing among them. The Lord is righteous, because I've rebelled against what he said. Listen now, all you peoples, and look at my sorrow. My young women and my young men have gone into captivity. I called for the ones who loved me, and they let me down. My priests and my elders gave up their breath in the town while they looked for food to keep their soul alive. Look, Lord, because I'm in a hard place. My insides are churning. My heart is turned over inside me, because I've rebelled badly. Outside the sword takes the children, and inside the house it's like death. They've heard me groaning. I've got nobody to comfort me. All the ones against me have heard about my trouble. They're glad you've done it. You'll bring the day you've called, and they'll be like me. Let all their wickedness come in front of you. And do to them what you've done to me for all my rebellions. Because my groans are many, and my heart is faint.

Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger. From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate and faint all the day. The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand: they are wreathed, and come up upon my neck: he hath made my strength to fall, the LORD hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up. The LORD hath trodden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me: he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men: the LORD hath trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress. For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed. Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her: the LORD hath commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round about him: Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them. The LORD is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity. I called for my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to relieve their souls. Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death. They have heard that I sigh: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that thou hast done it: thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me. Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.
