Judah goes up
Now after the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord, Who should go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight them? And the Lord said, Judah will go up. Look — I have given the land into his hand. And Judah said to Simeon his brother, Come up with me into the land allotted to me, and let us fight the Canaanites. Then I will go with you into yours. And they found Adonibezek at Bezek and fought against him, and they struck down the Canaanites and the Perizzites. But Adonibezek ran, and they went after him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his big toes. And Adonibezek said, Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table. As I have done, so God has paid me back. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there. Now the people of Judah had fought against Jerusalem and taken it. They put it to the sword and set the city on fire. And afterwards the people of Judah went down to fight the Canaanites living in the hill country, and in the south, and in the lowland. And Judah went against the Canaanites living in Hebron — Hebron used to be called Kirjatharba — and they struck down Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai. And from there he went against the people of Debir, which used to be called Kirjathsepher. And Caleb said, Whoever attacks Kirjathsepher and takes it, I will give him my daughter Achsah as his wife. And Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it. So he gave him his daughter Achsah as his wife. And when she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she got down off her donkey, and Caleb said to her, What is it you want? And she said to him, Give me a blessing. You have given me land in the south — give me springs of water as well. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs. And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the people of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the south near Arad. And they went and settled among the people. And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they struck down the Canaanites living at Zephath and completely destroyed it. So the town was called Hormah. Judah also took Gaza with its territory, and Askelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory. And the Lord was with Judah, and he drove out the people of the hill country. But he couldn't drive out those living in the valley, because they had chariots of iron. And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said, and he drove out the three sons of Anak from there.

And the Amorites forced the children of Dan back into the hill country and wouldn't let them come down into the valley. And the territory of the Amorites ran from the Ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.
