The twelve stones
When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord spoke to Joshua: Take twelve men from the people, one man out of every tribe, Tell them: Take twelve stones from here, out of the middle of the Jordan where the priests' feet stood firm. Carry them across with you and put them down where you camp tonight. Then Joshua called the twelve men he'd prepared from the Israelites, one man out of every tribe. Joshua said to them: Go over in front of the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan, and every man take a stone up on his shoulder, by the number of the tribes of the Israelites — These stones are to be a sign among you. In years to come, when your children ask, What do these stones mean to you? tell them that the Jordan stopped flowing before the ark of the Lord's covenant. When it crossed the Jordan, the water was cut off. These stones will be a permanent memorial for the Israelites. the Israelites did what Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the middle of the Jordan just as the Lord said to Joshua, by the number of the tribes of the Israelites. And they carried them over with them to the place where they stayed and laid them down there. Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests carrying the ark of the covenant stood. And they're there to this day. The priests carrying the ark stayed in the middle of the Jordan until everything the Lord had told Joshua to say to the people was completed, just as Moses had commanded Joshua. The people crossed quickly. When everyone had crossed, the ark of the Lord and the priests crossed over in front of the people. The Reubenites, Gadites and half-tribe of Manasseh crossed armed ahead of the Israelites, just as Moses had told them. About forty thousand ready for war went over before the Lord to battle, to the plains of Jericho. On that day the Lord made Joshua great in the eyes of all Israel. And they feared him just as they feared Moses, all the days of his life. The Lord spoke to Joshua: Order the priests carrying the ark of the covenant to come up out of the Jordan.
