Rahab hides the spies
Joshua son of Nun quietly sent two spies out from Shittim. Go and have a good look at the land, especially Jericho, he told them. They went and stayed at the house of a prostitute named Rahab. The king of Jericho was told: Some Israelite men have come here tonight to scout out the country. So the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab: Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house. They've come to scout out the whole country. But the woman had hidden the two men. She said: Yes, they came here, but I didn't know where they were from. At dusk, when the city gate was about to shut, the men left. I don't know which way they went. Go after them quickly and you might catch them. But she had taken them up onto the roof and hidden them under stalks of flax she'd laid out there. the men chased them by the road to the Jordan, to the fords. And as soon as their pursuers had gone out, they shut the gate. Before the spies settled down for the night, she went up to them on the roof. She said: I know the Lord has given you this land. Everyone here is terrified of you; the whole country has lost its nerve because of you. We've heard how the Lord dried up the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. When we heard it, our hearts sank. Nobody had any courage left because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below. So now, please swear to me by the Lord that because I've treated you kindly, you'll treat my family kindly too. Give me a sure sign, and keep my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters alive, and everything they've got, and rescue our lives from death. The men told her: Our lives for yours. If you don't tell anyone what we're doing, then when the Lord gives us the land, we'll deal kindly and faithfully with you.

So now, please swear to me by the Lord that because I've treated you kindly, you'll treat my family kindly too. Give me a sure sign,
So swear to me now by the Lord that, seeing I've shown you kindness, you'll show kindness to my father's house too. And give me a sure sign,
Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token:
and keep my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters alive, and everything they've got, and rescue our lives from death.
And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
The men told her: Our lives for yours. If you don't tell anyone what we're doing, then when the Lord gives us the land, we'll deal kindly and faithfully with you.
And the men said to her: Our life for yours, if you don't tell this business of ours. And when the Lord has given us the land, we'll deal kindly and truly with you.
And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.
The scarlet cord
Then she let them down by a rope through the window, because her house was on the city wall and she lived on the wall. She told them: Head for the hills so the pursuers don't run into you. Hide there for three days until they return, then go on your way. the men said to her: We'll be clear of this oath you've made us swear — When we come into the land, tie this scarlet cord in the window you let us down from. Bring your father, your mother, your brothers and all your father's household into your house. And whoever goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head, and we'll be clear. And whoever is with you in the house, his blood will be on our head if any hand is on him. if you tell this business of ours, then we'll be clear of the oath you've made us swear. She said: Fair enough. Let it be as you say. Then she sent them away, and after they left she tied the scarlet cord in the window. The spies headed for the hills and stayed there three days until their pursuers had returned. The search party looked all along the road but couldn't find them. Then the two men came down from the hills, crossed back over, and returned to Joshua son of Nun. They told him everything that had happened. They said to Joshua: The Lord really has given the whole land into our hands. Everyone there is scared stiff of us.

And hide there three days till they've come back. Then go your way. And whoever goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head, and we'll be clear. And whoever is with you in the house, his blood will be on our head if any hand is on him. And if you tell this business of ours, then we'll be clear of the oath you've made us swear. And she said: Let it be the way you say. And she sent them off and they went. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. And they went and came to the hills and stayed there three days, till the ones chasing them had come back. And the ones chasing them looked all along the way and didn't find them. So the two men came back and came down off the hills and went over and came to Joshua son of Nun, and told him everything that had happened to them. And they said to Joshua: The Lord has definitely handed over the whole land into our hands. And everyone living in the country melts away in front of us.

And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way. And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear. Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee. And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him. And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear. And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window. And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not. So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them: And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.

So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:
They said to Joshua: The Lord really has given the whole land into our hands. Everyone there is scared stiff of us.
And they said to Joshua: The Lord has definitely handed over the whole land into our hands. And everyone living in the country melts away in front of us.
And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.
