Be strong and steady

After Moses, the servant of the Lord, died, the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' right-hand man: Moses my servant is dead. So up you get. Cross the Jordan, you and all these people, into the land I'm giving the Israelites. Every bit of ground you put your foot on, I've given you, just as I promised Moses. Your country will run from the wilderness and Lebanon all the way to the great river Euphrates, through all the land of the Hittites, and west to the Great Sea. No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. I was with Moses, and I'll be with you. I won't let you down, and I won't leave you. Be strong and courageous, because you're the one who'll lead these people into the land I swore to give their ancestors. Above all, be strong and very courageous. Stick to the whole law Moses my servant gave you. Don't veer off it to the right or the left, and you'll do well wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law on your lips. Turn it over in your mind day and night, and make sure you do everything written in it. Then you'll stay on the right track and do well. Haven't I told you? Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid and don't lose your nerve, because the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Now after Moses the servant of the Lord was dead, the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' helper: Moses my servant is dead. So get up now and go over this Jordan, you and all these people, into the land I'm giving them, the people of Israel. Every place the sole of your foot walks on, I've given it to you, the way I said to Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon right to the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea where the sun goes down, will be your border. Nobody will be able to stand in front of you all the days of your life. The way I was with Moses, that's how I'll be with you. I won't fail you or leave you. Be strong and steady. Because you'll make these people inherit the land I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very steady, so you watch and do everything in the teaching Moses my servant ordered you. Don't turn from it to the right or the left, so you do well wherever you go. This book of the teaching won't leave your mouth. But you'll think it over day and night, so you watch and do everything written in it. Because then you'll make your way go well, and then you'll do well. Haven't I ordered you? Be strong and steady. Don't be frightened and don't fall apart, because the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast. There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Get your gear ready

Then Joshua gave the officers of the people their orders: Go through the camp and tell the people: Get your provisions ready. In three days you'll cross this Jordan and go in to take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you. Then Joshua spoke to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh: Remember what Moses, the servant of the Lord, told you: The Lord your God is giving you rest, and he has given you this land. Your wives, your children and your livestock can stay in the land Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But every fighting man among you must cross over armed ahead of your fellow Israelites and help them, until the Lord gives them rest as he has given you, and they too take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. Then you can return to your own land, the land Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan, and settle there. They answered Joshua: We'll do everything you tell us, and we'll go wherever you send us. We obeyed Moses, and we'll obey you the same way. Just may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. Anyone who rebels against your command and refuses to obey what you tell him will be put to death. Just be strong and courageous.

Then Joshua ordered the officers of the people: Go through the camp and order the people: Get your gear ready, because in three days you'll go over this Jordan to go in and own the land the Lord your God is giving you to own. And Joshua spoke to the Reubenites and the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh: Remember the word Moses the servant of the Lord ordered you: The Lord your God has given you rest and given you this land. Your wives, your little ones and your cattle will stay in the land Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But you'll go over armed in front of your brothers, all the strong fighting men, and help them — till the Lord has given your brothers rest the same as you, and they own the land too that the Lord your God is giving them. Then you'll come back to the land you own and enjoy it, the land Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on this side of the Jordan towards the sunrise. And they answered Joshua: Everything you order us, we'll do. And wherever you send us, we'll go. The way we listened to Moses in everything, that's how we'll listen to you. Only let the Lord your God be with you, the way he was with Moses. Whoever rebels against your order and won't listen to your words in everything you order him will be put to death. Only be strong and steady.

Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it. And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying, Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, The LORD your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land. Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them; Until the LORD have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you, and they also have possessed the land which the LORD your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the LORD’s servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the sunrising. And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go. According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses. Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.
