Manasseh's inheritance
There was a lot for the tribe of Manasseh too, because he was Joseph's firstborn — for Makir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a fighting man. So he had Gilead and Bashan. There was a lot for the rest of the sons of Manasseh by their families too — for the sons of Abiezer and for the sons of Helek and for the sons of Asriel and for the sons of Shechem and for the sons of Hepher and for the sons of Shemida. These were the male children of Manasseh son of Joseph by their families. But Zelophehad son of Hepher son of Gilead son of Makir son of Manasseh had no sons, only daughters. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah and Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. they came before Eleazar the priest and in front of Joshua son of Nun and in front of the leaders: The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers. So he gave them an inheritance among their father's brothers, according to the command of the Lord. And ten shares fell to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan on the other side of the Jordan — because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons. And the rest of Manasseh's sons had the land of Gilead. the border of Manasseh was from Asher to Mikmethath that lies in front of Shechem. And the border went along on the right hand to the people of En Tappuah. Now Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the sons of Ephraim. the border came down to the wadi Kanah, southward of the wadi. These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh. And the border of Manasseh was on the north side of the wadi, and its end was at the sea. Southward it was Ephraim's and northward it was Manasseh's, and the sea is its border. And they met together in Asher on the north and in Issachar on the east. And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Beth Shan and its cities, and Ibleam and its cities, and the people of Dor and its cities, and the people of En Dor and its cities, and the people of Taanach and its cities, and the people of Megiddo and its cities — three regions. But the sons of Manasseh couldn't drive out the people of those cities. But the Canaanites would live in that land. But when the Israelites had got strong, they made the Canaanites work for them, and didn't completely drive them out.

Get yourself up into the forest
The descendants of Joseph said to Joshua: Why have you given us only one allotment and one share as an inheritance? We're a great people, and the Lord has blessed us greatly. Joshua told them: If you're such a great people and the hill country of Ephraim is too cramped for you, go up into the forest country of the Perizzites and the giants and clear some land for yourselves. The descendants of Joseph said: The hill country isn't enough for us, and all the Canaanites down in the valley have iron chariots — both those in Beth-Shean and its villages and those in the Valley of Jezreel. Joshua said to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh: You are a great people and you've got plenty of strength. You won't have only one allotment. The hill country will be yours. It's forest, so clear it, and the far edges of it will be yours as well. You'll drive out the Canaanites even though they have iron chariots and are strong.
And the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua: Why have you given me only one lot and one share as an inheritance, seeing I'm a great people, since the Lord has blessed me till now? And Joshua answered them: If you're a great people, then get yourself up into the forest and cut for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and the giants, if Mount Ephraim is too narrow for you. And the sons of Joseph said: The hills aren't enough for us. And all the Canaanites who live in the land of the valley have iron chariots, both the ones in Beth Shan and its towns and the ones in the Valley of Jezreel. And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh: You're a great people and you've got great power. You won't have only one lot. But the hill country will be yours. Because it's a forest, and you'll cut it down, and its far ends will be yours. Because you'll drive out the Canaanites, though they've got iron chariots and though they're strong.
And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as the LORD hath blessed me hitherto? And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee. And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Bethshean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel. And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only: But the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong.
